her reactions of crying and running off seems genuine.
Of course it's genuine because she doesn't think her and her friends have done any wrong and the MC is being harsh.

In her mind she's extending the olive branch to reconnect to someone she saw as a brother and completely ignoring the fact she spent years shitting all over him and carried on doing so in that conversation.

Not once did she ask if he was okay or show any sign of compassion. All she is interested in is proving her friends have done no wrong, not helping the MC.

which is why I'm against the idea of reconciliation. all it would do is to alleviate her own guilt and let her seem like the one who tried to mend bridges. in their first interaction at the college, she just gaslights MC and says he needs to get over like it didn't cause him trauma

Maybe you're right, and I'm giving Annie too much of the benefit of the doubt, but we shall see. I'm prepared to send her packing if she even breathes in a wrong way.

It's kind of unbelievable at how obtuse Annie is about the bullying problem. The 'Bitch Squad' were the only ones who had those naked photos, so who on earth does she think actually distributed them? She also saw the squad (and their boyfriends) laughing and jeering at the MC, yet she still has the gall to say "oh yeah, they never really though of you that much." Like... obviously that's not true in the slightest.

Come back to reality, Annie.

the downside of peer pressure and the need to feel a part of something.. no matter how bad it may be to others

Either Annie is lying outright (which I doubt), she just can't see it (which is possible), the other Bitches don't speak about it in front of her (which is reasonable) or, as Tommy himself points out, some of the Bitches and their operatives are operating independently to engage in behavior they assume the Squad/Katie would approve of. I lean in the direction of that latter possibility. Emma and Charlotte are directly bullying and pushing others to bully and Katie, Sarah and Annie have various degrees of understanding that this is going on and either accept it as some sort of cost of doing business or think it is possibly a good thing in some way.

Origin of the term comes from 1944 film Gaslight, where husband is trying to convince his wife that she is mentally unwell in order to steal from her. The trick he uses is to make gaslighting in the house flicker whenever he leaves her alone.

Definition for the word from wiki: According to the American Psychological Association, it "once referred to manipulation so extreme as to induce mental illness or to justify commitment of the gaslighted person to a psychiatric institution but is now used more generally".[1] The term is now defined in Merriam-Webster as "to make someone question their reality".[2]

I didn't know that was the origin. makes more sense now, it always seemed like such a random phrase!

awhile back there was another game by the same name but it has long since been abandoned. whereas this developer seems to be invested in updating the game and giving us a finished product

While the '44 movie is considered to be the origin, the term is not used on the movie itself. Also the '44 movie is remake of less known '40 film of same name iirc, which itself is made based on older story set in the Victorian era iirc. There's also one episode of either Outer Limits or Tales From The Crypt, can't remember which, that uses similar plot, but in it the husband uses cd-player/stereo to play haunting noises to drive his wife mad.

Invisible man has the same theme hasn't it?
By the way, we use the same word in Psychology in Germany. It is uncommon, though.

I don't believe it is going so far in this game. It would be very dark.
I think Annie could not see it. She was emotionally blinded by herself because she has/wants friends.
What happened on the presentation is like a reality check for her. She's slowly adjusting her perception to it.
And that's how real people do that, too. It is bad from her in the last year, and she's starting to see it that way now.

I'm not so sure about this game's direction.
At first, it looks like it's pretty straight up, with at least three of the girls being complete bitches, and the stuff they did to the MC and others in high school, including letting people get roughed up by the jocks, is definitely bullying on a scale that could lead to either people killing themselves or others.
Then at the same time, the dev seems to spread hints that "all is not as it appears" including how Annie and Sarah, who seem to be the "nice" ones among the bitches, seemingly have no idea which extend their friends' bullying went to.
There's also this talk about the MC not knowing what is really going on, that they didn't put the pics in the slide show, that they have other big plans and have no interest in tormenting the MC anyway (apart from Charlotte it seems, but even with her, the stealing could be a hint at deeper psychological problems she has, which could explain her toxic behaviour etc..), that it isn't all about him etc... why are they even all at that university?

And if that is really the case, if that is to be another case of "My Bully, My Lover" where the bad girls aren't really all that bad, I would have a problem with that.
Mainly, because the stuff the bitches and their cohorts were shown doing in high school, goes way beyond anything in that game and is just so completely horrible and disgusting that these girls deserve the worst.
You can't show something like this and then try to play it as if it wasn't that bad and the girls aren't completely insensitive monsters.

That even extends to who could be the other suspects, IF the bitches didn't actually insert the pictures, Tommy, Amber, is one of them so hellbent on revenge that they would destroy the MC so that he won't falter from taking their payback?
Who else could be there?
No, I would really have a problem if the game actually took that direction.
And it would be a shame, because the game has a lot of good things going on, if only I did not have that nagging doubt that the twist to come could be that the villains aren't really supposed to be villains.

But before I rant too much here. I have fun playing this so far, the writing is fine, the renders are good and Icaruslabs seems like someone who really thinks things through AND yet still is willing to accept criticism and see if he can learn or gain something from it, which is really just commendable, compared to some of the prima donnas we've experienced around here.
I don't mind showing them as real people, not just two-dimensional monsters, it's really just that their actions have been so vile that it would really freak me out, if the game went in that particular direction.

Only the new film has a similar theme. The earlier films and the original novel are more about the Invisible Man being corrupted by his powers (or even driven insane through the chemicals in his formula) and planning stuff like world domination (he actually plans that in the original 1930s version, by stealing secrets and starting a reign of terror, basically), murder, rape etc..
