You can use a controller. Reassign keys with f1 menu but have fun with that.

Why does the ring of reckless warrior reduce my def and res to 1? It say halves in the description?

maybe whatever it is you're replacing was giving you defense

main factor is whether you fought with cats in armor or not, before this fight you can basically recruit anyone, except elma as she can be saved only after this fight

You put it directly in the root folder. There's no save folder. IF you want to make sure, just start a new game and save and you'll see the new save file.
