Run the "Dragonhouse.GameBootstrapper.exe" it'll verify your files and then launch the game. i was having the same thing and this worked great.

Yup, it did... on the second attempt for me. My antivirus program gave out a false positive on the first attempt, but I was able to recvover it.

for such a simple game it really does need a guide, has any one at least managed to decompile the game to see how much content is there in total?

The answer is that the puzzles are hard and the author is actually pretty good at making detective works, having good uses of decoys.
