According with the github there are a lot of broken things in the game engine. Your problem probably has to do with that. Backup your saves and wait for an update.

I keep getting a message in the text and in the npc's status window whenever I choose "spit cum into pussy" saying "ERROR:BAD FLUID" instead of them being covered in girlcum. My PC's status effects for being covered still appear normally. I've disabled every mod one by one and it still appears. How should I go about figuring out the problem?

I just started a new game to try and play with mods for the first time and then that happpened so it's no big deal for me right now. Just wanted to know if it was something I'd have to wait for the devs to fix.
Really wish the NPCs would react more to your reputation/skills/previous actions.
can see the dev making more stuff for that, just likely be prepared for your guy to be called a slut in all kinds of new ways.

- which mod loads first ? top of the list or bottom ? can I assume last loaded mod wins conflicts ?
- what is GR cache, and when should I clear it ?
- can I install mods once I've started a game ? how about removing mods ?

Are the donations broken ? I've tried to donate pee in a bottle, but the donate any liquid quest never completes.
The answer to your las questions is depends. Depending of how much you mod changes the game you can have no problem at all adding one or completely break your save.
A species mod wouldn't be a problem to add mid save but removing probably will have problems, depending how the game deals with errors, it can just show an error message or completely brake and close if you removed the shark mod and the tries to load the shark body parts.
My advice is just start a fresh game with all the mods and if you want to remove/add one mid game make a backup of your save before.
One of the most recent commits to the dev branch says that the sex engine is majorly broken and is currently being refactored, the fact that the issue occurred during sex is probably a result of that error.

I used my old save from 1.7 and I could find the quest to start the chain talking to here at the med bay. Try doing the other experiments or wait a few days, some quests need some time to trigger. You will meet the new 1.8 characters doing her quest.
While you wait help Alex at the mining bay to get some funny toys and meet Socket to unlock some upgrades for your cell, she will arrive at the station a few days after the game starts.
Also, there is a lot of broken things in the game right now. It could have something to with that as well. The dev has been working everyday to fix it, so maybe wait for a bit for a new build.
You don't need to complete any of the research experiments to become Eliza's assistant. They're optional.
