Maybe say they had been dating for 1 or 2 months or he had just got divorced/ended a previous long relationship and wasn't even looking to start a new one when he met her. This could explain why he wasn't in a rush to get too intimate straight away. Something like this could make it easier for an international audience to believe. Good luck with the development
