I think the dev should listen to no one and tell the story he wants to tell.
You don't like it, you can go play something else. There is nothing to be offended about.
It's my longstanding belief that it is the role of the author(s) alone to determine what their story should be. Incorporating feedback on that from the audience, even when well intended, tends to dilute the fundamental purpose of the work. No one likes stories written by committee.
It is, however, also the job of the author to gauge how well they are conveying the story they intend to tell, and that's where listening to feedback is not only valuable but imperative. That's not to say the author has to agree with any given critique, just that they need to determine as best they can what the critique is objecting to and evaluating whether the core objection is an intentional part of the desired story. If so, then the story is probably not going to be that critic's cup of tea and there's nothing to be done except agree to disagree.
But if it's not part of the intended story, it
may be an indication that the author has not effectively conveyed the intended story, especially if the objection is widely shared. In that case the author should reflect on why the matter comes across differently to the critic than it did to the author. Even the best of us can overlook things from time to time, and the author will always have a very different point of view than the audience (thanks to their knowledge of where things are headed and familiarity with background material that didn't make it into the final work). There's no shame in trying to correct that sort of problem when it does crop up.
As far as how my longwinded sermon ties into the current kerfuffle, I'd say it depends on how the devs intended Jaye to come across. If they intended Jaye to have a very clear stance on sex with someone other than the MC (one way or the other), then I think they may want to reevaluate her portrayal in the game thus far. If they intended her to have a more ambiguous stance, or feel that this topic is inherently going to be subject to wildly different personal interpretation, then they should probably not worry about the flamewar and get back to working on the update.
