I'm convinced him and TOBS just think we're supposed to get invested in these characters by default. Do they not realize they have to actually make you give a shit about characters for drama to actually mean anything?

It's kind of hard to appreciate the author if they write some pretty abrasive characters and their response is either "deal with it" (paraphrasing his response to people about the Takahiro voyeur scenes) or covering their abrasiveness with a tragic sob story. I think Bubs being "unappreciated" is your classic reap what you sow moment.

Honestly, if you look at many recently made AAA games with bland/unlikable protagonists, it does feel like that's a common writer issue - they think that everyone will love the characters they make by default and will go with whatever the writer plans for them, when in reality most people just hate them. There were characters I disliked at first which I grew to love as they developed, but doing that is REALLY hard and also requires self-awareness about the issues with the character, which is... kinda rare, especially in CoC2 team.
Oh and speaking of writer issues, I think this one of them. I don't think Savin was taking drugs when writing Cait, rather, it's the case of mixed priorities. A few pages ago I explained why I think Cait actually works really well as the first character and companion, in short: nothing too out there, horny and casual about sex like most people are in the game, setting the tone, and lets you fuck without any sort of moral obligations - essentially a hot catslut fuckbuddy. That works well as an opening story character in a porn game.
The problem begins when the writers mix this wacky porn game idea with a grounded explanation of why she is like that that clashes with the real world morals and the player cannot react to it in any way that makes sense or doesn't lock you out of a bunch of content. For Cait to not be like that - all they needed to do is to be more vague. Just say that Cait's culture in general is way more casual about sex and even has sacred prostitutes and she is one of them. But nooo, we need to have the story about her and her homeland that explains how she was trained for this position ever since she was a child with no way to express the clash of the morals that we are facing.
I think the issue here is that in pursuit of being realistic, detailed and "deep" for the story, Savin had to give a lore-friendly explanation for why Cait is like this that is still interesting and gives depth to the world and the character. A noble goal, I have to admit, but I think in doing so here didn't quite realize that... Refer to issue 1 - Not everyone is invested in Cait by default and this backstory doesn't make her better or more likable because it raises a lot of questions regarding morality of everything she has done. There is this thing that many find objectively evil, but the game doesn't have any reason to actually explore the topic and face those questions. Because that was never the point - it's there because the writer wanted to add depth to a very simple character without considering all of the moral consequences of that.
The funniest thing for me is that it wouldn't even be an issue for me of the story wasn't about Kas and stopping the corruption. Oh, a cult that raises sluts that then still function like normal people, who also try to spread their religion and legs? Sign me in, that's pretty hot and depraved for a corrupted world. But when the premise of the game is to stop a demon/cult from corrupting everything with the power of a slut who will probably be grooming children once this is all over? Yeah, that's a massive disconnect.
Personally I just love Brint and am waiting for more content with him and his family. :3
To give credit where credit is due, Bubs has written some pretty good stuff. Plenty of bullshit as well, but when he gets going, he gets going. I personally liked a lot of his stuff even if he's technically responsible for some of the worst content in the game. It'd be a shame to see the good parts of his writing go if he decides to leave for good.
On the other hand, the guy's a fucking asshole, incapable taking any form of criticism. I wouldn't feel for anything other than his writing(when it's actually good) if he did decide to leave for good.

NGL I saw Russian post here and then a Russian reply from Alterism, who's posts I really like. So seeing it in Russian and, being drunk, I assumed I was hallucinating, but it would be very funny for Alterism to be Russian. Thought I can tell that reply was made using a translator.
Has anyone else noticed that Charmers have like...the best spells in this game for Mages?
Dischord in on itself is hella powerfull, if someone else has summons in your party then Grand Finale is a great damaging option and also the only spammable Encounter spell in the game, Bolstering Dance is one of the best at-will spells ever and it only gets better if your Willpower is high.

If all of that wasn't enough, getting romantically involved with Livrea grants you the Aria of Waves spell which is just Dischord all over again but better/with shorter cooldown.

If we're hashing out on why charmer has willpower scaling spells, it's because Presence is already an aggressively loaded stat that scales leadership which itself scales directly with the
Now that stances are auto abilities and you can essentially go first without low agility investment (thanks to Panoply of whatever), you start your fights either being impervious to damage via deflect or, if early game, singing songs that heal every round.
There are some presence scaling offensive abilities (and items) but they're not particularly good.
- Charm Spell should have been buffed years ago.
- Banshee wail remains a mystifyingly awful ability and terrified remains a status effect that is mostly useless in the games current form
- Psyshock is betrayed by it's poor base scaling and additional requires very high spellpower to reach it's heights
- Warsong still sucks and should never have been an encounter ability
Actually now that I'm on it, on a different scaling tangent Soothing Dance didn't survive the resolve crunch either. No matter how you invest your character it's still far inferior to tossing out heal.
It's also how like Black mage has the passive that scales summons better and it really shouldn't. If spellpower scaled with presence (like Sorcs do with Charisma) then yeah sure. But that's not the case. It scales with leadership and many good leadership items (big exception being the guldring) aren't good spellcasting items. Helm of Heroes (10) and Conqueror's Breastplate (20) don't have a scrap of spellpower on either of them. While the one exception the Guldring has 5 power and pen.
I wouldn't think too hard about it. The combat system simply isn't well enough designed to warrant much thought.
