If I'm remembering correctly, you're actually spot on. A bunch of the gods, the mercenary commander who isn't even in the game (save for one scene where he effortlessly beats you for bullying his subordinates), and some other characters come from their DnD game they put online.

The thing about it is basing your story off a campaign that you played necessarily isn't the bad thing. It's the fact that they aren't using the medium to its strengths, and they're going against a whole design philosophy off their predecessor.
More tame and less furry is automatically gonna make the game way more appealing to most. But just because something is popular doesn't mean it's not ass or mid. Just one look at the game industry as a whole is proof of that. Hell, even something like Skyrim is boring and the definition of mid but it blew up because it was baby's first RPG.
Well the masses are like locust and will eat shit up if you jangle the right type of keys in their face. I mean we could start a chunky list of games, movies, and TV shows that are Certified Ass. But still make bank or continue while better things get put out to pasture. Plus they do have the bonus of being a big fish in a small pond. Don't think this type of game has that many options/rivals

I think if anything this game had a very strong start that petered out over time. I get that's usually par for the course with most porn games, but with CoC II the fact that the main story just hasn't moved on for three years really shot it in the foot. All of the big story beats we did get in that interim like the conclusion of Etheryn's arc felt watered down and cheap in comparison to the hype it was getting.
