I honestly think that is a mis-read on Victoria's personality about her being a bitch. I just re-read all her early speaking parts, and they go like this:
"No way! That loner?"
"Huh?"
"It's so cute that you're standing up for your little girlfriend."

That is all her thoughts/speaking lines during the first interaction on the train. So, She was shocked that Lucy (whom she called a loner), has a boyfriend. Was shocked when the MC talked back to the big dude/Brian, was patronizing to the MC that he was sticking up for Lucy, and teased Mika when she flirted with the MC. While not necessarily nice behavior, I wouldn't call that totally bitchy.

The next speaking line she has, is the morning she shows up at the Cafe asking for a job. While shocked the MC had a cafe, and that he was a student in the school, she was a little abrupt with him. After that, the interaction basically came down to what she expected an 18 year old boy would want to "try out" his new waitress. MC, being a gentleman declined. After that point, she tried to be nicer to Lucy, and gave up her friends. I agree that she wasn't very nice, but I don't see her actively bullying anyone. She was setup to be someone who was not instantly liked (like Lucy) but I wouldn't go so far as to say she was as bad as Rachel, in terms of how unlikable she is. Yes it could have been lack of story time in her "bad" phase, but still, I never saw her as an unlikable character.

Let see how this came about. Victoria, a pretty and smart girl, but comes from a shitty, poor family. Her dad is a degenerate gambler, and she is living with her gangster brother (and wife/kid), because she cannot live with her parents. She is broke, and her only friends are other outcasts (Mika), but we don't know much about Mika's story. Brian takes an interest in her (probably to get with her, her beauty), and Vicky and Mika become friends with Brian's realm, which includes big dude, and Hannah (which we later learn is betrothed to Brian). Brian and Mika are the instigators, and we later learn, fuck buddies. Vicky isn't interested in Brian, and Hannah is just there, as we later learn, because of FF reasons.

So lets see, we have a street/book smart girl, who is pretty, and knows how to get what she wants, having to learn to get by on her beauty and brains. Her family life sucks (to a degree, her brother protects her), but her parents definitely suck. She is friends with some nasty people, probably out of necessity. Everything she does is to protect herself. Her friendship with Brian (rich, powerful, likes her, will protect her) and Mika she gave up, the moment she got a better offer. While that is not something that inspires confidence in her "allegiance", it says that it was only a transactional friendship to Brian's gang.

Again, my point in this entire post, I don't think anything points to her being a "bitch", more that she has always been careful, deliberate, and tried to fit in where she was could, to survive. This reeks to me of a smart loner, with limited options.

Anyways, just my take on how I read it.

Chances are really high that one of the reasons Rachel acts the way she does is because she has a (really) fucked up home life.
Honestly, if she isn't she'd pretty much the only girl in the harem not to fucked up background.

Lucy: horrendously physically and emotionally abusive mother

Victoria: Gangster father who tried to sell her body to people he owed debts to, was only prevented from being raped because the debt holder knew her older brother and feared him.

Sarah: Controlling and uncaring father, tried to manipulate her into getting close to MC by terrifying her and making her fear for her safety

Akatsuki: insane and father used her in a bet with a man he just met, didn't care about how this man would treat her or what he might do to her so long as she spied for her father. She was unsurprised by any of this.

Hannah: Her father is using her as political tool. Has her engaged to someone he knows is vicious and abusive. Doesn't care about what will happen to her so long as he can serve what he sees as the greater good.

Alison: Was subjected to the same as her younger sister Hannah until she cut ties with her family which cased her sister to become the new sacrifice

Misaki: Incredibly strict and controlling parents. Misaki being Akatsuki cousin, at least one of her parents must be as insane as Akatsuki's father.

Akari: Same father as Akatsuki.

Catherine: Her mother is cold and calculating, abandoned her with her helpless and poverty stricken, though loving, father.

To me, for the moment, Akari seems to be the only girl whose life won't get a serious course correction by being in a relationship with MC.

Agreed that she's not as bad as Rachel. I think you view her earlier lines more favorably (or less unfavorably) than I do, but she definitely isn't in Rachel's league.

During a later interaction with Akatsuki it is said that some people tried to bully her but she just stared at them, which makes Vicky feel a bit guilty before she says she never did anything to Akatsuki. But it still stands to reason that being there while people you call friends bully someone doesn't make you much better.

I think you are right that Vicky wasn't nearly as bad as Mika or Rachel, and given that when most of the bullying took place while they were 14-18 we cant really judge her too harshly. However that doesn't excuse the fact that Vicky was there, with Brians group, either standing by while an innocent girl gets ridiculed or actively taking part in the bullying.

I am not saying this to argue that Vicky is somehow anywhere near as bad as Rachel, I just disagree with your framing of events. Just because we now know there are a lot of things that could have led her down that path doesn't mean Lucy or anyone else she did wrong would be privy to the same information.

Yes. Which is good. Look, I know, and talk every day, with people like that. Rachel may be an exaggeration, but she isn't much of one. They are committed, sincere, and (in my opinion of course) deeply wrong. I am pleased that Cosy isn't taking the "personal trauma" cop-out. No, in real life, I'm sure none of them....er, make that, few of them...would be turned around by a good spanking and submitting to a dom. But this isn't real life. I love the idea that Rachel simply believes she is right, but her emotions are at war with her beliefs. And, given that I believe her beliefs are incorrect, I love the idea of her emotions winning the battle.

Look - I will say, I was bullied in middle/high school. Why you would bully a dude who was 6'7" and 260 pounds of muscle at 14 (and 305 by 16), is beyond me, but they did. I knew who the instigators were, and who the hanger ons were. I didn't care much about the hanger ons. I could give them a look and they would look away from me, and I knew they were there because of their friend. They didn't bother me much. It was the person making the initial comments, and the ones who would get physical with me. Honestly, that to me is why Lucy's acceptance of Victoria was quick and sincere in my mind. Yes it makes for quicker prose, but if one of the little shit hanger ons actually caught me 1:1, apologized and quit being a little shit to me, I would have forgiven them pretty quickly myself. I don't even have the positive personality of Lucy, so seeing her acceptance was nothing for me to accept in game.

OK, I'm now at the end of Day 26 and looking forward to 0.12. Thoughts on some of the girls:

• Lucy's made to be instantly lovable--successfully. She's very cute, and very friendly to MC; they hit it off very well. Some of that is foreshadowing of the abuse (and her resulting insecurity), but I don't think it all is. It's interesting to me that after her stated concern for being jealous of other girls, she plays the biggest role so far in adding other girls to the harem--she's ecstatic when MC suggests adding Sarah, encourages him to pursue kitty (though they all do), and when he says he'd be fine stopping at four, she pushes him to at least consider adding both Hannah and Catherine. I don't remember her saying anything about Alison. She is, I think, the most big-hearted of the bunch (and no, that's not a euphemism, though she's definitely the biggest in other areas too).
• Victoria - She was initially, I thought, set up to be unlikable, but got over that quickly enough. IMO the hottest of the girls (at least those we know well), even though I don't tend to favor pneumatic breasts. She's much more overtly sexual, much more quickly, than Lucy, probably to try to improve her position relative to Lucy, as MC's already told her that if one of them has to go, it won't be Lucy. I'm honestly a little put off by her masochistic streak. I'm a little surprised, though pleasantly so, that she's already said she'll be with MC for the rest of her life; after all, she's only known him for about three weeks.
• Sarah - I don't know that she edges out Lucy as my favorite, but she definitely gives her a run for her money. As I mentioned earlier, she reminds me quite a bit of Kali in Harem Hotel, and Kali's easily my favorite LI there. Sarah doesn't look anything like Kali (to Sarah's frustration), but their characters are similar--both are unaccustomed to (favorable) male attention, and particularly to caring male attention, and as a result they're both pretty prickly. MC figures this out--at least to a degree--about Sarah pretty quickly, noting in their first encounter that his calling her "cute" caused her to miss his mention of "tiny." I don't think I'd call her "hot" as such (though "black bondage swimsuit" kind of changed my mind there), but she's very cute. I'm really looking forward to her stay-over in a couple of days, and hope she'll finally recognize that MC really likes her and is really attracted to her. Their conversation while she was trying on swimsuits seemed to make some progress there, though. I expect once that really connects for her, she's going to turn, well, a lot less prickly (even now, it kind of seems she's just going through the motions).
• Akatsuki - Kind of conflicted on her, and kind of disappointed that she made "girlfriend" ahead of Sarah. She certainly has the looks, and may have even a kinkier side than Victoria. The betrayal is hard to deal with--sure, it wasn't her idea, but she went along with it. Some of her feelings were obviously genuine, but how much was genuine and how much was just an act? I guess I see her purpose in her sex scene with MC once he got her back, but I didn't really like it.
  • Akari - I think she likes MC, and/or cares for her sister, more than she admits. She sure didn't hesitate to take him up to her room, and didn't really seem surprised or put off that they were leaving together.

I strongly suspect it's something at least moving toward an apology. And if that's the case, it completely explains her behavior on both occasions:

• At the cafe, she wants to speak with MC privately, which she'd naturally want to do if apologizing (though she certainly should include Hannah as well, she has a lot more to apologize to MC for). MC, however, wisely doesn't want to be in the same room with her without witnesses.
• At school, she wants to talk with him, but can't seem to spit it out. Again, entirely consistent with her trying to apologize--that wouldn't be easy for her; she'd definitely be at a loss for words. MC has things to do and places to be.

MC doesn't even have to be upset with her for his behavior in both cases to make sense--but of course he is, and for good reason.

And of course, if Rachel is heading toward redemption, she's going to have to apologize. Still not sure how I feel about that, though--I'm sure it's a character flaw on my part, but some characters are far enough gone that I don't especially want to see them redeemed. Cass in Artemis, for example. I'm not quite sure Rachel is in that category, but it isn't for want of trying.
