Actually, the grenade isn't activated until the spoon is released. The pin is there to stop the spoon from being released while the grenade is in your pocket or in storage or wherever else one might put a grenade not currently in use. If you pull the pin out, you can replace it as long as the spoon isn't jostled.
That said, the spoon is much more sensitive to jostling, so it's generally extremely unwise to pull pins from grenades you don't intend to immediately use. All it takes is a slip of the thumb and you might turn into pink mist. There's a reason they don't have new recruits in boot throw grenades any more.
