Been trying to redo older characters as stylized/cartoon style kinda inspired by Tufos style comics/animations...
I kinda like this style.

I think I would darken the environment about half on the first one (Top) and play with it till ya get it where it looks like a darkish room... The spot is just in the wrong place for room lighting...

I do both. Trial and error are some of the best teachers. You can be shown what to do, but you actually have to sit down and DO IT yourself to really learn. Make mistakes, then figure out why it didn't work etc...
