- 8 GB video memory is the basic minimum for serious work
This is not true. You can do just fine with a 6 GB 1060. More is obviously always better, and the less you have the more you have to get creative and the longer you have to wait on your renders, but there are multiple developers doing some pretty good stuff without 8 GB vram.

Actually several months ago I had only and old 650 with 2 GB memory and still was making pretty good stuff. Not only this - I know people which make pretty good stuff without *any* memory at all - just using somе paper and a pencil.
But the OP didn't ask - what is the min memory I must have to make "pretty good stuff", he asked quite another thing.

Also depends on how busy you want your scenes, the less stuff you want in there at a time, the more you are willing to put together in the game engine or photoshop, the less you need. The more stuff/people you want in a scene, the more you will need to do it reasonably.

Point is, get the best you can afford, you will be happier in the long run.

Well i guess it depends what you want to render, how much time are you willing to give for a render? Resolution, creativity, quality / iterations.

Right now i have the 1080 with 8700k 16 gb ram.. Am i happy? Not really..
On a scene with 3 4 figures placed in a bedroom only the iray preview takes like 2 minutes to load.. And another minute or 2 to get a decent shitty picture.
Tested the time on a 4k picture, 2 figures, water reflection, background and a light.. About 2hrs on 8700k and 4h18 min on the gpu only..

I have a 2080 11gig, with 32gig of ram, and sometimes some scenes with 3+ people can take 30min to an hour or more just to show something on the screen or get to 1%, and that's only at 1080p.

No matter what you have, you will want more. ;)

Actually the reason for this is IRay render is rather... what is the polite word to use instead of shitty?
While even with the old Blender render you can really make previews and adjustment in real time.

Uh, are you sure your card is being used? Or is there like 5 million lights right next to glass, windows, etc? If it's a normal scene, lit properly, with 3 people and those settings, should be quick. I have a 1080 and a 1070 and a normal scene with 3 people takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

You can do that with iRay as well. iRay also has two mods that you can use, interactive and photoreal, for those with a PC that can handle it.
