So is this game just 100% linear with no reason for the map or navigation at all?

Edit: I just now realized that there is family stuff totally unconnected to anything else going on. I didn't think I could do anything with them because the game just told me they were busy the first few times I tried talking to them and I started doing what the story told me to do, which quickly took me out of the village
