After I finish If you do, I continue work on the Gasmine visual novel!!
Hi Inusen ,
just a little fan post here, but mostly including critique and food for thought. If it reads too negative, please note that I'm writing this with the most positive intent.
Your artstyle is one of the best out there, together with ScarlettAnne. Both yours and hers carry the games they are used in, even if their technical execution, release-cycle and/or story is lackluster. (thinking Milftoon Drama, but also The Secret of the House) Which brings me to something I really wanted to point out as your own games are also suffering from it; they are simply
bad games.
From hint-missing sandbox games ("click anywere in the gameworld to find out what you need to do next"), "management games" in RenPy, to the underlying engine (WTF is Milftoon Drama even using?), a game even with the most awesome artwork will never leave their mediocre state if not done right.
I am very sure that you are still learning, and maybe you just need some guidance from an experienced developer to create a game that does not only relies on your artstyle, but actually complements it to achieve a top-tier game like BADIK, Dreams of Desire, Melody and such. But if you started your own games to be independent and/or simply to "try it out", and you have the feeling that you are not improving, then maybe you should consider working together with a capable developer to actually deliver an A-tier game.
If I think about your comics for example, your art style shines above anything else, where even ScarlettAnns artstyle can not compete in the slightest. (lets not even talk about other comics published under the Milftoon Site, most of them suck ass) I don't know if that is because your style is simply perfect for comics, or because in comics there is nothing stopping your style to shine. But if your comics tell anything about what works for your art and what not, I think that a simple and basic visual novel with some choices for the players would be the way to go. No sandbox, no riddles, no "combine item X and item Y", just a plain oldschool VN with a story to tell and an artstyle to fall in love with.
Well, that text escalated a bit. But I hope that this text helps you out and maybe even makes you rethink what you are planning to do with your own games.
Nevertheless, I hope you will continue to spread your fantastic artstyle, because that also means that there are some shit games made better.
Much love
A fan with too much time at hand
