We are going to put in a popup to make players aware of the ability to click on NPCs.
I have my own pet theory on why you guys were having problems though. You see, nobody seemed to have this problem in the last version. Back then Duncan still looked like this:
View attachment 4101943
Would you have been more likely to figure out that he isn't the main character, and hence a clickable NPC?
I was already a bit confused when I played the previous version of the game last year. ;) One of the problems is that the game shows several characters with medium-short dark brown hair and a mustache. They also seem to be around the same age, maybe in their thirties.

Paul is supposed to be 15 when the events of Dune start (as stated by Frank Herbert). Duke Leto is in his late 40s with long black hair, although he has been portrayed with shorter black hair and gray streaks. Duncan would be in his 30s or early 40s depending on the sources: early 30s according to the Dune Encyclopedia approved by Frank Herbert, but mid 40s according to the books published later by his son.

It's literally just a Behind the Dune clone, you even start at the exact same point and have to do the same reverend mother "put your dick in this box" test; with also an option for her to help relieve you after. I get that it's "based off the book" but given that you both took the artistic liberty to replace the initial meeting with the reverend mother with these things I'm calling this a very lazy clone.

I like AI art, but please use it to adapt something more original and use it as a base for storytelling something new, not clone an already-existing porn game's story to the letter.

As stated in the game's credits section, this game is taking inspiration from both the original Dune series and Balsa's Behind the Dune. Just because there are similarities to Balsa's game, that does not make it "literally just a Behind the Dune clone". Also the Reverend Mother meeting is a clear and obvious point to sexualise in a porn parody, almost every dune porn parody virtually does the same thing, are they all Behind the Dune clones?

If you actually look at the game for what it is, the amount of planning, writing, and coding from my team all culminate from months of work (which we are providing for free to you btw). The idea that you would dismiss all of that by calling it a "very lazy clone" is laughable.

If you don't like what we've done with our game, please feel free to create your own game.

I don't know that the earlier art would have helped me all that much. Maybe a bit.

To the best of my understanding Duncan Idaho was like 40-something in the book, so honestly my brain was pre-wired to look for one of the following:

A -- 'Talk to Duncan Idaho' button
B -- Picture of a middle aged and/or grey haired man.

I did see the current picture. I instantly assumed it was Paul. So I clicked on the button to go to the next area.

In the next area you immediately see the 'Train with Duncan Idaho' button -- the exact thing I've just been told that I need to do and the thing that I was expecting to see in Step A, but greyed out.

The popup will fix the issue. Removing the option to go to the next room or the 'Train with Duncan' button until he is interacted with (not greying out -- removing) probably would also resolve it, as would introducing Duncan through dialogue or exposition so that we know what he looks like.

The young Jessica scene was supposed to be shocking, that is the whole point of the scene. Don't worry too much as events like those are only setting up the plot of the rest of the game, this will very much be a Paul centric game/story.

The bad end is pretty trivial as it doesn't even lock you out of the rest of the game, just select "that was just prescience" and you return to before the scene. I don't quite see the problem.
He is concerned that the game over stuff is going to be become more often (like power vaccum) and you will give hardcore sexual content for characters like Jessica only in that gameover scenes but not for the MC's non-ntr/non-sharing path with Jessica. And I guess, even for non-hardcore sexual scenes, MC has to work his ass off to become close to Jessica.

I think after the death of Leto II they did, and to a small degree before that, but only in secret.
Ah, was this by God Emperor of Dune? I read that but honestly found it boring, forgot most of it other than Leto turning into a sandworm, and not sure I finished. After Children I thought the series went downhill, but that's personal opinion.

I also personally think the first three books are the actual Dune, and the other three are kinda meh. Haven't even read the ones by his son, though, so I don't have an opinion on those.

No need to worry about that. There'll be plenty of hardcore action for the MC later. With Jessica and with other characters. I just don't see a reason not to take things slow. There's plenty of story left for things to happen. The gameover scenes are just throwaway scenes to give a bit of variety.

There are things I liked about God Emperor, and things I didn't like. It certainly was strange in an interesting way. It's just that the whole basic premise behind it, The Golden Path, doesn't make much sense to me. Which is a criticism for Children as well. I didn't like the ending of that story all that much.

Hey everyone, new poll is up so go vote!

I'm gonna clarify that things not voted for will still be implemented at some point, they just won't be prioritised for the next major update.

Haven't played the game yet but I have to chime in, my nerd sense was tingling. The Golden Path makes total sense, but since one of you said you didn't even really finish reading God Emperor, it is no wonder you might not understand fully as this is the book where it's all been explained in detail.

Essentially, the Kwisatz Haderach is supposed to have the male lineage of memories which the Bene Gesserit cannot access - as well as the female memories of the matron mothers passed on through the water of life ritual that he successfully undergoes. Long story short, this is always the goal of creating a Kwisatz Haderach, to guide humanity to a supposed bright future, under the purview of the Bene Gesserit, of course. However, Paul bucks them and becomes his own man, then pulls a double fake out when he decides he's actually a bit too weak/kind to fully follow through on the Golden Path and leaves it to his son Leto II instead.

The whole idea of the Golden Path is essentially that humanity has only a very narrow "eye of the needle" through which they may pass, from the perspective of a nigh-omniscient being who can see the past and predict the future. Almost all potential human futures lead to our own destruction, usually as a result of "thinking machines" with Leto-like prescience being able to flawlessly hunt humanity to extinction. In order to avoid this, Leto II has been breeding humans with a gene that prevents them from being "seen" by his prescience, as well as training humans to spread themselves far and wide across the galaxy to make themselves impossible to fully wipe out. His genetic breeding program which results in Siona completes his first objective. He achieves the latter mostly by being a total tyrant for thousands of years, intentionally provoking a mass exodus from his empire upon his death and the loosening of the travel restrictions he enforced for millennia. The "golden path" makes a lot of sense if you understand it; he is training humans to thread this metaphorical needle's eye, and survive the coming existential crisis his prescience alerted him to.

Anyway, books 1&2 are very different from book 3 and especially book 4, so I find that a lot of people who love books 1&2 don't love book 4 nearly as much. It's a shame, since it really is the bow which neatly ties the entire story of the first 3 books together, and personally I prefer it as the ending to the series; books 5 and on become a bit too strange and Frank never finished where he was going with those, sadly.

Keeping this one on "watch" until I have more time to thoroughly check out what's here, but until then here's my two cents (and questions)[Feel free to ignore questions you've already answered]:

  1. I've noticed a few complaints regarding the interaction with Duncan - Will the UI receive further updates based on user feedback?
    • Side note: If you guys do plan on sourcing feedback from the community it might be worth setting up a Discord server. UI design is one of the few aspects of game development that is the hardest to nail right.
  2. While not all AI software is created equal, are you guys using Dall-E or equivalent?
    • Side note: The only reason I ask is due to this poll, as it seems like significant improvements were made regarding fingers and body composition.
  3. How much of the core mechanics are developed? Additionally, when do you estimate mechanics such as pregnancy will be added?
  4. Will cheats and/or difficulty settings be added for those only interested in the story?
    • Side note: This topic tends to spark controversy due to some feeling as though games should only be played in a specific way. Personally, I find the inclusion of cheats/assists as something that shouldn't be controversial since the only person it's affecting is whoever is using it.

Lastly, I personally would most likely support this game if you guys were to begin monetizing it purely because it seems like an interesting enough parody of the real story. Plus I absolutely love the aesthetic of Dune with the blending of Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

I understand what the Golden Path is/does. I just don't understand/disagree with the assumptions that lead to the Golden Path. I find it all very contradictive. Humanity requiring a precise path forward in order to survive in the long term... questionable. Prescience leading to stagnation for an individual makes sense, but prescience of an individual leading to stagnation for the whole species? If Leto's prescience really is so detrimental and he knows it, why doesn't he kill himself sooner? Why the thousands of years of oppression? His rationale there is to instill a strong desire in humanity to be free. But I find that too to be questionable.
If prescience is so bad, why does it require prescience to steer humanity through the narrow path that leads to survival?
I understand that Frank Herbert had a strong distaste of authority, self-abandonment and charismatic leaders. If DUNE had be be distilled down to a single message, it would have to be: "Beware of heroes!" (Uttered verbatim in the first book. ) Yet in the end, it takes the worst tyrant imaginable in order to save humanity from itself. I assume the contradiction is intentional and intended to be profound or something... but I think he's just wrong.

Essentially, the Kwisatz Haderach is supposed to have the male lineage of memories which the Bene Gesserit cannot access - as well as the female memories of the matron mothers passed on through the water of life ritual that he successfully undergoes.
Since you brought this up - I've been meaning to question the nerds here about this thing sooner or later. And now is as good a time as any.
So since only the KH, a male, can access both the male and female memories for whatever reason, whereas females can only access the female ones - How come Alia has the memory of her male ancestors? Or at least one of them, the Baron? That shouldn't be possible and it's never explained. Did Frank Herbert make a mistake there or did I miss or misunderstand something?

How exactly do you start it? I'm stuck on the title card.
I assume you're not seeing the start button? It's pretty small, in the lower left corner of the title card. We will fix this in the next version.

1 - We plan on implementing a tutorial pop up for this part and perhaps some other parts - based on the feedback we receive. We find it to be an inelegant solution but haven't come up with a better solution yet.
- We do not want to go through the hassle of having to maintain a discord server at this time.
2 - I can't speak on that. One of the other devs will have to chime in.
3 - The dialogue system is fully developed. The skill system is only partially developed and currently very underused. Spice harvesting is still entirely missing and that's what we're currently working on. An exploration mechanic is also planned.
- Pregnancy will be added once it makes sense from a story perspective. I'll leave it at that. Just... don't expect a big payoff early in the story.
4 - Personally, I find the inclusion of cheats/assists detrimental to the player experience in some kinds of games (even singleplayer). I'm not gonna go on that tangent now though, because this is NOT that kind of game.
We plan on adding the ability to skip chapters later on. This is sadly a necessary feature, because on the engine we're using, saves cannot be made to be compatible between versions. We haven't discussed cheats yet. I'd say that's not out of the question. Currently the game is so short (when you just skip through everything) that cheats and anything of that sort simply aren't necessary. You can speedrun through the game in 5 minutes if you know what you're doing. Maybe I'll write a walkthrough at some point.

Thanks for the kind words. We are hesitant about monetizing the game due to the commitment this brings. We have considered the option of monetizing it for the purpose of hiring an artist. But we haven't taken any steps in that direction so far.

Grey hair at 40?! :ROFLMAO:
First, I knew guys who went bald or started to go gray in their late 20s. Second, I didn't imply fully grey -- just older. There is almost no difference between Paul's portrait and Duncan's portrait when one is canonically 30+ years older than the other.

AI art can generally do "young man" pretty well and it can do "old man" pretty well. Anywhere in between its fucking useless.
