Elfs was actually the standard plural form of that word before Tolkien. Some spellcheckers still don't even recognize Elves or Elven as "real" words. Same with Dwarves, which is why the Disney movie is "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and Warhammer fantasy has Dwarfs instead of Dwarves, though apparently Warhammer does have Elves instead of Elfs for some reason. Really, the weird thing is, why do we have wolves and leaves instead of wolfs and leafs? Tolkien is sometimes credited for this as making English more consistent, but he was actually perpetuating an inconsistency.
