As much as I'm looking forward to the next updates, I'm starting to wonder how people will react if this game takes a strong turn genre wise.

As it stands, it's solidly Scifi, nearly everything is connected to the super advanced technology from which the game gets its name. Meaning all the other genres present, like Fantasy, aren't really the genre of the game itself. So how would people react, if, as seems to be strongly hinted or implied, that the game isn't just a game, and that all or at least a lot of the servers are in fact real dimensions. Meaning that various fantasy fantasy aspects of the game are independently real, making the game both fantasy and scifi equally, not just scifi.
The line between sci-fi/fantasy is pretty blurry, IMHO. Star Wars is a fantasy novel w/ lasers, while subspace in Star Trek is pretty much magical, for e.g. More important, people usually get more attached to characters than settings, so as long as those first stay consistent, it should be fine. I-4-1 would welcome this *cof, massively telegraphed, cof.* twist, specially if this meant less time spent in the "real world", since the high school drama or Alex's daddy issues are my least favorite part of the game.

I'd miss Luna and her bro dad's* shenanigans, tho.

*By "bro dad" I mean a dad who is a bro, not some "landlord" thing, uhm-kay?

Oh yea, I'd agree with most of what you said. I just know some people can like scifi but hate fantasy and vice versa, so something that's been mostly scifi and only incidentally fantasy turning heavy on the fantasy might be really annoying for them.

I-4-2 would love the twist and to leave the real world behind much more. No reason to stay if all the girls are going to be joining us in leaving "the real world".

As a person who subscribed (note: not mine, the original theorist is someone in this thread whose name escapes me) to the "Eternum is the nexus point/gateway to the Multiverse/Astral Sea" theory after evidence and hints started showing up and pointing to that direction (though not fully concrete enough as of yet to make it undebatable fact), I'd probably pull an "Ashley Johnson after Sam Riegel pulled a clutch counterspell in the Final Battle of Critical Role Campaign 1" react:

Critical Role - Sam the Wide Deceiver - _Spoilers Ep 114_.gif

But yeah, as the others have said if you're coming into this from OIAL then there's already hints in the game that this takes place in the same setting, which would also imply that certain things that were revealed in the former are considered true in this game (i.e. magic exists in the real world, demons like Astaroth are from another plane of existence - likely natives from Eternum).

If you haven't played OIAL, then the reveal (assuming the story really goes in that direction and not be railroaded by a surprise plot twist) might come off as a surprise unless you're really paying attention to the hints and clues on the matter. And personally, with the way how the story is told I'm not sure if you could call it a "genre shift" given how the tech is never completely explained (which isn't the case in sci-fi stories where elaborate explanations on how tech in the world works are readily available) and is part of the game's overall mystery (which is what this game's "genre" really is - a straight-up mystery story with adventure-horror elements - when you compare it to OIAL which plays out more like a Goonies/Stranger Things-style adventure-horror story).

As I've said to the others, I have played OIAL, but it was long ago. But to be honest, I don't think that even if I'd gone straight from that to this, would I have made all the connections that seem to be obvious to everyone else.

Well... we can now assume the dev is making a Caribdisverse of his works... I expect he design it well without making a mess of characters doing things impossible to achieve, or being impossible to do because of the illegality of the matters... Like the Supreme Fatherhood of in Overflowverse...

Jesus christ, that's probably the worst family tree I've ever seen

If you went with any other ending (aside from a particular Bad Ending where Calypso is mentioned by OIAL's big bad), then yeah I can see that.

I got like 99.9% of the canon harem ending, and didn't watch all the variations of it's ending. I got all the girls in the harem, but because I fucked up with our friend dying, I couldn't bring all the girls on the plane at the end. I did have the option to chose who to bring out of all of them though. Which isn't too bad for someone not playing with any walkthrough mods or anything But yea, I still don't think, I'd have picked up on those, unless I literally went from OIAL to this, and even then.

I'm generally good at picking up on things, but some of the links people have pointed out are subtle as fuck

Makoto Itou from School Days is related to him (he resents his father's guts). In one game he's in his 20s and in another he's in his late 30s. Really horrible character, to some regard the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

This does happen
Anyone have a save or an image of said secret ending in OIAL? I don’t have a save where I have no girls that’s just depressing.

It’s part of the Shiny Days series but you might have heard of the anime School Days. Same universe and Shiny Days is somewhat of a prequel if you could call it that

Wait, the guy who misjudged a fart was Oliver? Seems like his life continues to be a... a real shit show. Good for him.
Yep, couldn't agree more but that's what happen when you don't pay attention and don't stay away from elephant statues, those thing are very dangerous for your health...:D:ROFLMAO:

Shouldn't he have taken the elephant statue instead of the alternative? Especially when we think about what happened to him in the end?

It was so disappointing that Oliver didn't made sweet love to that elephant statue back at Jasmine's party. After being rejected by every girl he set his eyes upon (except one which he had a shotgun wedding) and going mad, that would've been so bizarre, painful and amusing to witness.

This is a good question, honestly being in his shoes I would have opted for the elephant, it was way cuter imho....

Damn, you did me one better. Thanks!

Now I'm curious to know what players' reactions were upon seeing that ending and Dalia of course. In terms of pure looks she beats out nearly every other OIAL girl imho.
Agreed. I'd say that by that point, Caribdis had probably already gotten much better, and was most likely already working on Eternium. He would have kept the art style in OIAL the same for consistency, and added the new art to wet our appetites for the next game.
