Some of that can be explained as an optical illusion, but I think it is also related to how our minds work. They fill in gaps automatically (correctly, or not), so I guess it stands to reason that they filter out unnecessary things in the same way.
I read an interesting article about how, if you walk into the same room every day & everything is in the same place, your mind will eventually stop using your eyes to relay everything that's in front of them &, instead, simply refer to the mental image in memory & it only attracts your attention if there is a discrepancy between the mental image & what your eyes show, i.e. something is not in its usual place.
