At the beginning of the story Orion says he lived in Kredon until he was 8. The age for first year of middle school is 11 - 12. If Penny is 21 but close to 22, while Orion is very recently 18, they could easily have 18+ months between them. So that fits.

I'm not saying there aren't any continuity issues. There are other minor mistakes in the writing, so it's possible the timeline for his youth wasn't perfectly plotted, but it doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

That flashback is one of my favourite scenes. If anyone ever needed a reason to love Penny (or Nancy), this is it.

During the first morning before school... When Orion is talking to Dalia, there is a couple of statements that as someone from the UK I find puzzling!?

1. Orion struggles to know what the difference between miles or kilometers are? Errrm in the uk we use miles as well. Just like the USA.

2. School uniforms are mandatory in ALL schools in mainland uk... Yet Orion says he didn't have to wear one? As far as I was aware, was that pretty much all of the usa you don't have to wear uniforms? (Apart from kredon in this case lol)

1. Dev is from Spain. Probably basing what he wrote from faulty research.

2. OIAL was set 12-14 years before in the UK and they had uniforms. Something must've changed regarding the dress code rules during Orion's stay for him to mention that.

You don't have to wear uniforms in public schools. If you're being educated for money or by a church or something that might be different. There can be dress codes even if there's not an official uniform (minimum skirt length and stuff like that.)
