a. I'd assume with long lifespan comes a radically different perception of such things. Instead of not getting attached you'd know that you'll outlive almost everyone around you, trees included. So instead of isolation you can choose the opposite - cherish every fleeting thing, experience, relationship, because they're uniquie. I don't think for elves living literal thousands of years monogamy will be an option, because imagine spending fifteen centuries with the same person. Unless you're a perfect match made in heaven under a parade of stars, you're gonna break up at some point. Thus if you don't want the whole society to turn into a bunch of spiteful mutants angry at everyone around them, you'll have to learn to let things go and focus on the positives. To be honest I newer understood why people have such a fascination with elves when it comes to romance. The age issue is just too fundamental. I mean, how can you mate for life with someone who is fully aware that your entire life will come and go within what for her is but a heartbeat? Can she truly love you if she knows she dare not get too attached lest she suffer for it for the rest of time. And will she keep loving you decades from now when she is still young and nimble while you shrivel away and can't get it up any more? That is the sort of niggling doubt that I can do without.
Call me a romantic if you must but I'd rather have a girl I can grow old with together.
b. I wasn't really interested in Calypso, partially due to those exact reasons...
