Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey. Happy Pink. Daedroth. Excellent combo! Of course I was gonna jump on this asap. It helped that I was in the mood for something more lighthearted at the time... and the fact of the matter is that this dev's games are similar to a lot of Acerola stuff in the sense that they don't take themselves seriously. At least for the most part.
Before that though...
Thank you very much for your effort Daedroth . Given what you mentioned in the TL notes, it seems like you had quite a few head-aches when working on this thing. What you described about the code for the text boxes sounds like a major pain in the ass to deal with, time consuming too... You did a great work with it, with the rescue sections too btw. Plenty of peeps would've just skipped those, since it looks lime image editing work. The only thing I disagree on is the honorifics thing, which I always prefer to see preserved, but that's a me nitpicking thing, and you don't have to mind it.
Plus, this game isn't really complex enough for that to matter much anyway.
Moving on!
The game!
Like other Happy Pink games out there, it's a silly thing that provides an excuse for rampant smuttery. While there's rape and other such things in the game, none of it matters and it's treated in in silly ways for the most part. There's only a few more serious bits, and they honestly feel a tad jarring when compared to everything else. Specifically, the bits with the kidnapped knight girl apparently being fucked to death if you fail to rescue her, and similarly with the researcher girl. The other rescue events are notably more silly if you fail them. Then again, even the ones with a more serious bent... end with Chris getting raped by the guy asking for the rescue... >.>"
One thing that should be noted from the get-go is that the game doesn't have any corruption in any sense of the word. What I mean by that is that Chris' attitude and behavior doesn't change in any way from the start of the game to the end, and no matter how many dicks she takes, she's the same silly girl at the end. If you're looking for corruption or even slutification, this is not the game for that. Hell, the game pretty much implies from the get-go that Chris is not a virgin at the start of the game.
Even if she was, it'd be impossible to finish the game as a virgin, even technically, due to the fact that there's one mandatory sex event anyway. At the very least, I have no idea how you'd avoid the transport event when going to the commercial district.
Still, given that there's no corruption, slutification or negative consequences in general, there's no real reason to avoid the H-stuff anyway, to the point where it's weird that the dev even included that one ring that stops "rape attacks" from happening. Even if you grind around a bit to pile up a few extra levels, you're unlikely to see the thing happen more than ~2 times per monster-type. Especially once you get the growth ring that gives the 50% XP boost, and later the one that gives 100% XP.
Plus, reaching more than lvl~21 doesn't really matter, because the biggest problem in combat is Chris' health pool, which can't rise over 999, while her attack stat, or specifically, the M.Attack stat, doesn't rise fast enough from levels to make a particularly notable difference. The bulk of attack will come from the rosaries you can get from the goddess statues.
ANYway, the game is pretty basic RPGM stuff. There's nothing special about the way the combat works, fairly typical turn based thing. Barely any skills. The usual jazz. About the only thing of note is the fact that the bosses tend to hit pretty hard, so it's entirely possible to lose to them if you're not careful. Later on, poison and mana-drain also make an appearance for boss-fights, and they have to be managed with skills, specifically, which you need to acquire from goddess statues. They're not particularly hard, but they're harder than you usually see in H-games and it's difficult to really grind to the point of overpowering them because leveling just doesn't offer much aside from the HP and MP increases (and the former caps at 999 as mentioned before).
That said, the fact of the matter is that the combat is secondary to the fact that most of your time will be spent running around seeing H-events. While there's defeat rape events, the fact of the matter is that they're unlocked when "rape attacks" happen, so you don't really need to bother going out of your way to lose any fights. Most of the H-stuff is tied either to exorcisms, which of course end up being lewd, and location bound spirits which do things to Chris once she gets close enough. It also escalates from groping and hand-jobs and whatnot, to orgies, group sex and all sorts of other things. There's quite a bit of variety in terms of content and context, so the game doesn't really get stale, at least, if you're into all the perverse stuff they have on hand here.
My only complaint is that a lot of the scenes are pretty short... but on the other hand, everything is animated. They're not necessarily the most amazing animations evah, but there's pretty good for what's doable with this engine and if you like the art-style, you're obviously gonna enjoy the fact that it's animated even more.
Oh, and, the possessed slut-fuck thing? Yeah, that's honestly the best description for a number of scenes... Specifically, some of the events have Chris end up possessed by slutty spirits, and then she obviously ends up fucked because of it, all while the spirit in question has her acting as a total slut.
What that means is that aside from the difficulty in the boss-fights, the game is honestly more of a scene collector than anything else.
It's worth noting that there's some stuff that, for whatever reason, is not in the gallery. Specifically, the prostitution mini-scenes, the mini-scenes involving failing certain rescue events before the last "corruption" level, and the win/defeat scenes involving the final boss fight. I don't know why this is the case when the dev even went so far as to put a "companion" toggle for the H-events that you can run into by wandering around during rescue missions.
The rescue missions are also a weird bit tbh. The time you have to do them in is extremely generous, and more importantly, there's nothing stopping you from just... not picking them up until you've explored the area thoroughly. This is relevant because there's always an instant travel point very close to the rescue target, so once you have that, you can jump through and just deal with the optional boss to rescue whoever it is you're going for at that time. They're also weird in the sense that for some of them, the implication is that entire days if not months pass to reach the last corruption stage. Specifically, the knight girl one, where the last stage has her visibly pregnant with no magic shenanigans involved.
I also don't think they have any impact on the ending? In fact, I'm not sure if anything has any impact on the ending... Even losing the final boss fight doesn't properly transition you into a real Bad End, even though the scene leading up to that fight implies that this will be the case... the dev just didn't deep dive into it.
All in all, they only really matter in the sense that they give you more smut to enjoy... it's just a shame that they're so easy that you'll never see the changes in real time unless you do something like pick up the rescue mission and just wander around doing other things. Even then, time doesn't pass while you're in combat or in other H-events, at least, as far as I could tell, which means that you'd have to walk around a lot for time to pass naturally.
The mini-stories around them are at least hilarious. Then again, a lot of this game just straight up funny.
ANYway... Exorcist Chris is not some super-amazing game. In terms of gameplay, it's mediocre even for its time and for what's possible with the engine. There are older games with better mechanics and whatnot. However, it should get some points from the way it integrates the smut with the gameplay, and the fact that the smut is properly tied into the story. There are a lot of H-games out there where the smut is just tacked on, and the gameplay and story are basically completely separate from the sexy stuff. That is absolutely not the case here, and for that alone, I think that this game deserves some appreciation and that it's worth picking up. The story might not be anything to write home about, but it does its job in terms of giving flavor to all the lewdness that you get to see and so on. At the absolute very least, this game is worth 3.5 stars, imho, 4 if you're really into Chris and whanot. Can't give it more than that because the smut and how it's integrated into everything is really the only strong point for the game... but I'm more nitpicky than most people.
