For why there is so much hate on Helius, don't think of it as he's seen as some evil mustachio twirling villain, more so just a callous asshole using other peoples money in a way he definitely wouldn't if it was his own on the line. If he had his own, fixed pool of money he was investing you can bet he'd focus down and finish a project to raise more for the next. With his patreon he's just treating it as his own personal project fund whatever he see's fit, no thought to the project he was advertising at the time or choice given to the supporter as to what happens or if they get refunded/compensated in some other way. Some of his supporters are clearly fine with that, but you can't be surprised there's a lot of people who supported one of his projects and are pissed to see it abandoned with nothing in return for them. The difference in his attitude here is that if he had actual, proper venture capital being invested what he's doing would be considered embezzlement. You wouldn't be able to just raise funds for one project, abandon that with no consequences and put that money towards some other personal interest of yours. But Patreon has no quality control, so here we are.
As for why his entire past keeps getting brought up, it's just a good way to see how he'll behave in the future. If he has for the better part of a decade rug pulled his supporters, chances are he's not going to feel guilty rug pulling them once more. No one is saying that these events in the past are still ripping off each new patron, obviously origins being cancelled years ago doesn't impact patrons from this month. People bring it up as a "Hey, be careful. Just because he says this is what you're supporting now doesn't mean it's what he's going to put your money towards." This most recent campaign controversy is a good example. I'm sure most supporters don't really care or are happy to see resources not being wasted on a SFW campaign. But the few who may have been excited get nothing for that, and will be warned/banned for mentioning it's canceled in the discord server. Given this has happened with past elements of Helius's games like gallery mode or even any offline mode, and entire games, of course there wll be enough people burned to bring it up fairly often. When you consider a site like f95 sends traffic to games like this, it's even more likely other people who came from here and got burned are going to speak up and say "Hey, maybe don't support him, he's a dick."
