Ah, I understand what you're trying to say there. I play most of my H-games in the same way after all and prefer games with full mouse support. Hell, I don't play FPS games normally... (Though I did finish TitanFall 2 due to... circumstances... man I hated the whole time section thing...)I guess I phrased myself poorly. I didn’t mean that “hard” games are bad—in fact, the harder it is to stop NTR, the better the payoff. I actually like that. What I meant was “skill-based” gameplay specifically.
For example, Leane is one of my favorite games. The way its story and gameplay blend is great—it shows you how strong and helpless you are at the same time. That’s an excellent way to do NTR, and sadly, there aren’t many games like it.
When I say “serious” games, I mean you can't play a Titanfall-style game the same way you play an RPG Maker game, a Leane-type game, or something like Fire Emblem (not sure what genre that falls under exactly). I don’t know how others usually play H-games, but I mostly play while lying down, using only my mouse (I’ve got extra buttons, so I rarely touch the keyboard).
You can still play something like Seed of the Dead at your own pace. What I’m getting at is this: the challenging part of an H-game should be the strategy or tactics—something that makes you think—not a test of your reflexes or FPS skills.
That’s just my take. It’s not about “hard” vs. “easy,” it’s about the style of gameplay.
And to be clear, I’m not against FPS in H-games. There was this Japanese NTR FPS—kind of horror-ish? You explored a hotel and heard lewd sounds behind doors, and peeking through them was a pretty cool experience. So I’m totally open to NTR FPS, just not that kind.
I played BBQ’s FPS demo around a year ago, and honestly, it was awful. I get that it was early in development, but I’m talking about the gameplay itself—not bugs or polish. It just didn’t feel right.
Ahem.
I still think there's merit in H-games being reflex based too, so to speak, if only for the sake of variety. Alien Quest Eve, Night of Revenge (The succubus fight... ugh...), Holy Knight Ricca (that damn jump for that one skill man...) are all proof that this sort of thing can be very popular, even if it makes it harder to enjoy the H-stuff. In truth, for a lot of those types of games, you end up doing it in the gallery rather than part of the gameplay... but there's still a certain... satisfaction to earning it all.
As such, I don't think attempting a skill based H-FPS with Titanfall-esque movement and whatnot is a bad idea in and of itself. Done right, I could see it being very popular, especially since BBQ intends to mix 3D stuff with 2D art scenes too for the H-stuff.
Whether BBQ can actually make this game in a way that's actually good... Now that is a whole other conversation...
Personally, I'd have preferred if this game was his primary project, and I'd have preferred if he put in more work into the various mechanics of the game in terms of how you have to manage things to prevent things from happening to blondie. However, the guy is pretty passion driven, so I can't really blame him for making the things he wants to make. If you think about it, most of his games are fairly different from one another in various ways... I suspect that to an extent, experimenting and doing new things are part of his passion... Which I can respect considering that it'd have been much safer financially to either work on a Nebel Expansion as a DLC, or a sequel with expanded mechanics. (Though I'd have definitely loved more Nebel too...)
All the big-name JP studios tend to get there by just doing the same thing over and over again for the most part.
