Couple of questions regarding this Neon, if you don't mind me asking, as I'm fairly new with the game; I started playing it this game and have only gone through the remake content (Ch. 1-7).

First of all, I didn't know about Wren being downgraded from the original plan. Why was that? Because the first impression I got from her from the small interaction at the shelter was a really good and positive one, so thinking that she might not be romanceable is a bit of a downer. I was really looking forward to getting to know her better.

Secondly, you've mentioned the mini-games, but I haven't had the pleasure to try them yet. Are they canon, or just some side and parallel content in order to spice things up a little and provide more variety?

Well, the concept of the game kind of plays heavily into being direct, not passive. On top of that, I think what you're looking for goes against what most players are seeking in a VN; nice, likeable LIs that you can romance. You can squeeze that attitude out of them depending on how you treat them, though. Try going for corruption route, maybe on the meaner side? I think Pepper, Gabby, and Ashe give those vibes on those routes, maybe others too, not sure.

The only character that's naturally like that is Isabella, but she's not a LI. Tessa is definitely a bitch, but she doesn't seem to have any interest in the MC; she feels like dark route bait more than anything hehe.

This only works when there are other characters to provide juxtaposition for nice characters. When all characters are essentially moulded into the same nice archetypes, people start begging for self-centred characters.
It's why there are so many posts asking for Isabella to recur in the game, because she seems interesting and out for her own goals.

The same reason why Risa was a fan favourite, until her backstory also revealed her to be a damsel in distress.

Ironically, I think people would have liked Nikki better if she were a gold digger out for MC's money at the start of the game, then went through a period of self-reflection and threw her life away, to come crawling back.
Instead of the current version of her that's a selfless "nice" and pure" girl played straight from the start.
When Nikki betrayed the readers' expectations of her and sold her body, she essentially betrayed the "purity fans" expectations of Nikki. Making her essentially a waste of a character for them.

Think about it, purity lovers won't like Nikki because of her past actions, and conflict lovers who want more interesting LI's won't like her because she's still that "selfless character" archetype.

The favorite Li polls were all pretty useless. People tried different methods, and polling sites and the results were all over the map, some of them appear to have been spammed as well. But I'd say, generally, Nicky, Ashe, Brittani, Gaby and Mason are the favorites - with a late surge for Jun who isn't really a li, but who we were teased with in the new Chapter 1. Purity lovers don't seem to be at play much, because both Nicki (who was technically only a nude model - not a prostitute or porn star or anything) and Mason (who was definitely a sex worker) are still very popular. I've thought of a way to do a decent poll, but it would take a long time, and would require a lot of voting - not just one round.

Edit: The ages also don't help. I haven't met a lot of real gold diggers (who weren't prostitutes) in the 18-20 age bracket and if they were, they weren't very good at it.

I definitely think Nikki was more interesting as a character before the rework. She had a redemption arc. Now she's just super sweet, with a flat character arc. The fact that her original character was such a lightning rod that made people love or hate her wasn't a bad thing...it meant she was written well.

Definitely agree on Risa also. Her super forward, flirty nature, with a strong personality, was a nice counter to the other female characters (who all have to be chased). Even though I wasn't interested in her, it was nice just for some variety. The later updates to her story line (damsel in distress) killed that.

Neon your release schedule is faster than most games being posted here.

Most devs i follow here post 1 update every 4-5 months. The ones who use a faster schedule usually release smaller updates to stay inside the 1-2 months window.

I think you're over-simplifying both the LIs and the players. The LIs aren't all just 'nice', they're just not unlikeable. Pepper is abrasive and closed-off, but a tender, expressive core opens up if you treat her well. Gabby is bratty and argumentative, but a self-conscious loneliness reveals itself when you get to know her. These two are the most disagreeable LIs, but the others have similar complexities, and all of their stories are full of conflict of one kind or another.

As for players, well, maybe there's some very particular ones out there who want 'purity' or 'toxicity' or whatever, but many are clearly satisfied with the game as is; even the ones that constantly bitch and moan here like their life goal is to be annoying, keep coming back to the game they supposedly hate. People's moods and preferences shift over time, too, so it isn't even static.

And, again, not sure how you guys are figuring out what characters are popular or unpopular? There's a lot of players that never comment here. For all you know, Nicki and Risa actually got more popular with their updates, but you might never find that out on these forums.

I hate to tell people how to perceive the VNs they play, but in all honesty, all the hate against Nicki was due to either a misunderstanding on their part, or lack of clarity from the writing. That's been remedied, and now it's as intended from the beginning. Her character is unchanged, just better fleshed out.

On Risa, I guess I don't see a problem? She wasn't originally intended to be a main LI, but she became one. Fun-loving flirt isn't complex or interesting enough for a LI, so she became a flirty, fun-loving addict with a heart of gold. She now has a lot more depth and multiple interesting future arcs have opened up for her regarding her addiction, her guilt and reclaiming her conscience, her strained relationship with her father, her lack of meaning and happiness, and her family's wealth and its impact on society. I don't really see a damsel in distress, just yet another LI with lots of problems that the MC can help resolve or exacerbate, i.e. 'Friends in Need'.

It is my only gripe with too many VN's now...has to be added, extra pointless drama to cover up either a lack of story or skill in making someone interesting. The vast majority don't need it either, base story is enough without adding mob familes, crime drama, murders, prostitution rings....

'Fun-loving flirt' isn't a story or an arc, which is what this game is going for. A dev can write a bunch of consecutive slice-of-life scenes for an experiential feeling (which I'm into, btw), but where's the story go? Slice-of-life can bring a lot of atmosphere and feels, and make you feel like you're living the moment yourself, but it can also become boring and monotonous. There's also a lot of interconnected plot threads in FiN, which exacerbates the problem an overly simple LI would bring. What to do when you've exhausted one character, yet all the others still have ground to cover?

'Most people agree with me here' do they really, though? This game seems to be doing fine.

Btw, side-note, but on slice-of-life VNs: I don't play that many VNs in general, so my judgment here is limited, but most slice-of-life games I've tried are unfortunately too shallow and poorly written to even be good at that, they just end up being boring and aimless. Shame, because I really like the idea of SoLs.

That said, I've said before that I think, when the game is finished, it'd be a lot of fun to go back and add scenes for side characters, creating a path for them. I still think some of the scenes I had planned for her, could be kind of fun.

• Guy volunteering at her food pantry, and meeting more people who are struggling. A lot of potential for corruption content, but also for developing a love path as Guy sees Wren's selflessness in action.
• Wren checking in on Mason, making sure everything is on the up-and-up at Guy's studio.
• Guy photographing Wren, and choosing to obscure or highlight her disability.
• Wren folding her organization into FiN, for good or ill.

I still think it'd be cool to have more Wren content, but I understand the complexity of threading so many LIs stories. The ideas that you've suggested sound really good. In the end, I don't mind if someone is considered a main or a side LI, after all some of my favorites are side-girls that eventually had enough content for a path of them. I'm not into corruption, I'm basically doing Lover/Friend paths while playing the game and avoiding any corruption/dark choices. For me it's like they don't even exist So, developing a love path for Wren thanks to Guy being 'enchanted' by her selflesness and her similiarities with him when it comes to being charitable seems like a good connection to explore.
The photoshoot especially could be a particularly cool scene, although I guess it'd be great if the disability wasn't highlighted nor obscured; what I mean is, Wren doesn't make a big deal out of it, and in turn it seems like a good idea to not give that much importance to it, in the sense that the focus wouldn't be on her prosthetic (highlight) or lack thereof (obscure), but rather on Wren (sort of humanizing the disability?).
