Hey Neon, I meant to ask this after I first played: is there a reason why Jun speaks with an awkward formality? Is that a thing for how Chinese immigrants learn English? Or is it supposed to be a character quirk?
Well, Jun is meant to have been in the States for 15-20 years. But she still mostly speaks Cantonese at home with her family. So she retains this kind of formal, learned way of speaking English, which is a little stilted. I initially thought about giving her more broken English, but Viola has the market cornered there. :D

WASTE OF TIME WITH THESE FUCKING REWORKS ARE JUST EXCUSES TO DELAY LONGER.
Just admit you have writers block and then move on instead of reworking pointless stuff
My $15+ subscribers have been playing new stuff for a few months now. They seem to like it.

agreed
update mania from pc market ( think baldur's gate 3 ) fell on the ren'py side of the road
why would endless reworks / repairs grow dev s dicks, it's the going forward that should do it, anybody noticed the absolute champion : new coral city?
who notices lightning changes and a couple new pics for the same scene ?
expand and finish what you have then move forward with season 2 or a new project, say like philly with broken dreamers. though he probably died after finishing it , no other updates
My dick is always fully erect. It's a medical condition which I suffer greatly with. u_u

I guess I wait better until season 1 rework is done completely. I really like the story, but replaying too often hurts the experience. Would be nice if the changelog on page 1 would reflect the actual state more. I kind of got my hopes with the current update up after an approximate year of wait. I don't mind the waiting, but the disappointment hurts, even when it is my own fault.
I put out 500~ images of new material to the public, in May. So, a year of waiting seems like a bit of an exaggeration. Thanks for being a fan, though! :D Sorry to disappoint, but the new stuff should be available this month.

Hey hey people, long time lurker, first time poster.
First, I've gotta say this is obviously a masterpiece. I'm in the ranks of those that love the remake (although I'm sorry for that girl in Brazil, I guess my Guy had some things to vent).
As a Dark path enjoyer, the remake made it absolutely impossible to be mean to Nikki which is a full 180 for me regarding her, so bravo for the writing! I liked her before (despite my Guy's treatment of her) but now she's just so wholesome I could cry (with my eyes for once).

I've got a question : when the rest of Season 1 gets released, I won't have to start another save, right? I don't see why I would but I'd prefer to make sure.

Thanks NG for the amazing work. And I must say, I've followed this thread for a while and you are beyond patient with some people being real aggressive for no real reasons. Must be hard sometimes, so congrats on keeping it cool!

ps : Joshy92, I've been a silent admirer for a long time. Your horny simping is truly inspiring, a real masterclass :D
Thanks for the kind words! Regarding the save situation, right now I'm treating this like the serialized/development build, and planning to use it going forward. A thing I'm working on (and the main reason I wanted to redo/relabel variables) is having variables for saves port over from Season 1 to Season 2. So, once you finish Season 1, you should have all the variables necessary to go into Season 2.

The Steam version (which has been pushed back a couple times now) will likely have some changes to the script, to make sure everything's in compliance with their recently revised TOS. That build (minus music, achievements, etc.) will probably be used as the final Season 1 build, with some potentially onerous content placed in a separate file. But it won't have any new variables, etc. so it won't affect anything for Season 2.

That said.. I've also been pretty open about wanting to go back and build in character-specific branches, paths, scenes, etc. that weren't initially there, as DLC. So I might put out The Wren Path that adds scenes for her, or the Isabella path, or the Jun path. Now, will I? I don't know! I suspect that, by the time I'm done with the whole story, I may want to step back from AVNs for a long time. But there's always a chance that I want to keep building onto it. At the end of the day, this game is in active development. I try to put out the best, most polished updates I can, and to my credit I've only asked people to restart their game one time in three and a half years, and only when I had 1500~ new images of content for them to play through.

Chapter 1 or Season 1? Ffs why do these things have to be so confusing on this site all the time? Versioning is really easy. It's just counting.
I don't control the front page of the thread. But, with this build I'm trying to clean up a lot of that stuff. This build adds the mini-games A Slave to Desire and Blue Valentine to the main game, as accessible extras. I'm also going to add the anti-Nicki patch and original Chapter 1. I'm working on adding the text short stories, if I can get the text to display well in-game. Basically, I'm trying to make the final Season 1 build into a one-stop-shop for all the content up until now. That'll basically leave Friends in Need Season 1, and Friends in Need: Legacy as the only things people need to worry about.

When will developers learn that "Remakes" of earlier chapters before the game is even close to being completed will result in massive time sinks that make people feel like nothing of note is getting complete. It's even worse when lots of interesting scenes are removed because the developer no longer likes those scenes.
I get this note a lot, so let me say: Season 1 is one game. Season 2 is another. I waited until Season 1 was finished, before doing any of the remake stuff. The intention had always been to have Cassie's appearance be the mid-story break/breather.

I spent something like two years and eight months working on Season 1, delivering consistent updates, and ended the season at a place which clearly left people curious and wanting more. I think I earned a little self-indulgence. My paying supporters are always welcome to decide their money is best spent elsewhere. But so far my numbers have remained pretty steady, in spite of the challenges of the changing landscape of AVNs.

Been reading this thread to gather as much information as possible, and I still have some remaining queries that I was hoping Neon or some other kindful soul could help answer.

Okay so for starters, what exactly is this is new in this update? Is it purely a remake of content from Chapter 1-10 with the remaining chapters getting reworked later?

If it is a remake, what type of remake is it? Is it purely just better renders or do we have new dialogue and scenes as well?

I've seen some comments mentioning certain dark content being removed in the remake, is that true?

To Neon if you ever read this, I just want to say once again, I really love your game. Every new chapter has been better than the last, in terms of both story and even renders, and it's easily become one of my all time favourites. I think most people would classify it as one of the best games on the site. It's also very unique because it really captures several themes like domination, rape etc perfectly.

As a huge fan of this game from day 1, I never quite felt the need for a remake, but think it's absolutely fine if you wished to do it given that it's your project and your vision. My only worry is that going forward the game may take a different path and was hoping you could clarify how so. I hope I'm not asking a question that's already been answered a hundred times. Having certain characters look different or older is a bummer to me, but was never the only reason I loved this game and expect to enjoy playing through this remake anyways, so hoping the best for you and this game <3

Don't like how Nikkei's story was changed, in the original there was eluding that Nikki Semi-seduced MC to take the money, there were feelings but also some deceit, also some nods that Nikki had to do some not so savory stuff to survive. There was character flaw which gave it depth, she wasn't this "untouched flower" the new story makes it out. I guess some soyboys screamed "NTR" or some shi. I swear to god they get mad for LI's when they even look at another man that's not the MC but fine with them full on scissoring other women and that's somehow not NTR.
Honestly, I never got any crazy NTR heat. The truth behind the change is much more boring.

When I wrote the original Chapter 1, it was done with the idea that, if it didn't get any traction, I'd ditch it and go back to the drawing board. So, it was written in such a way that it could just be a one-off. As a result, I wanted the dynamic between Guy and Nicki to be a little more of a blank slate. Their story wasn't really one of a years-long friendship, but one of two coworkers and an unrequited crush, and how money could change that.

But once Chapter 1 got some attention, and I realized people wanted to see more, I leaned into the story a bit more and abandoned the blank slate protagonist. As part of that, I used Nicki as something of an anchor point for Guy, giving him someone to bounce dialogue off of, and talked about shared history with. This meant rewriting her as more of a good friend, than a casual work friend. Unfortunately, that also meant that this weird disconnect continued between the Nicki of Chapter 1, and the Nicki that's present for most of the story.

tldr; I didn't feel like the Nicki that existed through most of the story, matched the one introduced in Chapter 1.

  • Chapter 1: Fully remade, 950~ new images.
  • Chapter 2: Added a bridge scene taking place in Brazil. Added some stuff to Ashe's intro to have Guy meet her boss before he meets her. Redid all the images from Ashe's initial meeting, but dialogue was left 90% intact. Completely redid (visuals and dialogue) Gabby and Madison's introduction. Added scenes (art and dialogue) establishing Guy's relationship to the Chen family. Added art and dialogue to expand on the month Guy spends working at Barron Books, dating Ashe, etc. 500~ new renders.
  • Chapter 3: Added a new transition for Guy agreeing to meet Madison, adding some ero renders for Jun, Ashe, and a secondary character named Indigo. 30~ new renders.
After that, it's all pretty minor. Some of it was story stuff -- like, when Guy can agree to Ashe's roleplay request, I didn't originally have it tagged if the player agreed or not. So she'd still come at his with a roleplay request during the date, and the only option was to turn her down. Now, if you shot down her request, she'll still try to fuck you, but the dialogue is different.

Or if you were kind of a dick to Ashe in Chapter 2, trying to blackmail her into sleeping with you only to call it off, the next time you saw her she'd act pretty nonplussed. Now, the next time you see her she'll be irritable and still on the corruption path. But she has more points, making it easier to impress her (by helping Viola and being mostly decent during dinner) leading to her wanting to sleep with you.

If you kissed (but didn't go down on) Gabby in the original Chapter 2, it wasn't brought up again. Now, there's a variable there that can be used to get a late start on her romance path.

Originally, if you didn't take certain pics with Britt, or agreed to delete them, they'd still be there when Guy reviewed photos later. Now, the accurate ones show up. And I added more saucy Britt pics.

It's a lot of little stuff like that, where the time investment was mostly small, but with an outsized return in terms of making things more accurate, and the story feel more 'real.'

You mean "removing" stuff from dark options :cautious:, can't rape Viola in her shop anymore, all girls are 19, Cassie look way more older than before... ect...
Is this true? I had a look through the image files in the game folder and they are there. I think the developer has just made it more difficult to pick the right choices to unlock these routes. I know that the dark Nicki options you have to pick very specific choices to get that path and all the previous content was there albeit happening in a different location.

Folks, there is a reason why devs don't acknowledge patch content. Take a moment, have a think, and figure out why that is. I've said as much as I care to.

That said, to people saying I changed Cassie and Gabby's models: no. I did apparently change Gabby's eye color at some point, though I have no idea why (or if I even meant to).
