This isn't an option for me - I'm on Linux so virtualization is basically required.

Truly wished I could help you there but I had just as much issues until I didn't virtualized the environment. My guess is that the animation framework does some funky chromium accelerated things that wants slightly advanced GPU rendering and that messes it up.

try downloading game from different source and just copy ur save, in new windows somehow files get corrupted and system got problem downloading from internet in my case
