From my understanding, I am not American and never even visited, dating is non-exclusive, as in you can date multiple persons, and when the relationship turns exclusive it's girlfriend. Again, I may be wrong and saying a very stupid thing, but, it's what I've understood after over 50 years dealing with this culture. If I'm wrong, please forgive me and teach me.

From conversations with both men and women in several different states in the U.S. dating is mostly ignored nowadays. The main purpose seems to be that both parties try the cake, without having to buy it. It let's them meet each other and ghost them after if there's no interest.
Here in Europe we meet. Greet. if we like we keep meeting, if we don't buh-bye. After meeting a few times, well, it's time to talk. That's it. No formalities. Is it better? Is it worse? Bah, if it works and babies are made, fuck it, whatever.
