As a software developer, I always mark version 1.0 as the first public build, not an official release. Once an official release rolls around, you can roll back to 1.0 (though that may cause issues with version control), give the official releases a different tagline, or just keep going to where a version '1.0' is, say, version 10.0.2. Not once have I ever thought of 1.0 as a complete or official release. Any competent player would notice the fact that, despite the version number possibly looking complete, they would read that the game is in a Testbuild. So in reality, instead of being an obscure v1.3.8, it's actually Testbuild (or pre-alpha) v1.3.8!
