Can you recommend this game to me and if so, could you give me advice on how to start and understand everything about the lore?
Yes, I recommend this game. Obviously, it's highly rated--and deservedly so. Some things to keep in mind:

* mods: As far as I know, the gallery mod and outfit mod work fine. I also use the walkthrough/cheat mod to minimize work, but it can cause issues. The two most important things to note appear to be 1) Don't cheat on friendship levels (as this skips content directly), and 2) Don't cheat on anything related to the bar (as some cheats might cause long term content problems.)

* how to start: In game, you mean? It seems fairly self-explanatory. There is little happening at the outset. You will quickly meet two employees and one occupant. If you're not using the WT mod, you'll probably want to use the wiki for help--specifically the sections on Lin and Kali and how to trigger events.

* lore: You'll know everything you need to know when you need to know it. Lore is spread out throughout the game.

If you update to Version 18.2, can you use your saves from 17.2? If so, how?

wschneid
Yes, you should be able to without issues.
Unless you played the beta of 17.2 which had been leaked here before 17.2 was officially released.
If that is the case, then there is a good chance that the saves are fucked.
Saves are in two locations, but should be automatically detected by the update to 18.2.

Yes.

Near-future scifi, elves are slaves, most people are elf-racist, some people are trying to create robots to be slaves instead of elves, protagonist inherits a hotel and decides to make it a safe haven for various women in need of a place to live, including some elves.

IF you are on PC, you don't have to do anything, though you can copy your save folder (HaremHotelXX\Games\Saves) and your screenshots. Though the PC has a backup folder in your system files.
Personally, I don't like to rely on that though.

Going to need more information.
What did you download?
Where did you extract it?
What did you use for that?

Are you using a MOD? I've only had that Issue (uncaught exception occurred) once, just re-downloaded it and hadn't seen it at all since.

Does it make a difference if the version 17.2 is modded? My version of 18.2 did not find the saves and when I moved the save folder into 18.2 they don't work.
Is it possible to just overwrite 17.2 with 18.2?

What mods were you using? Older versions of the walkthrough mod were really bad in that regard but I thought newer ones had fixed that.

It's also possible you saved at points in the game that weren't "safe spots" so to speak, and future modifications in the scenes/events can make those saves give you a lot of errors. Many of my old saves can't load properly in 0.18.2 without some rolling back or skipping error messages.

For future reference, the safest place to make saves on is in your hotel room. If you still have v0.17.2 installed, try making a save there and then making the move to v0.18.2.

I don't know about the specific mod you are using, but generally speaking mods can make save files not usable with unmodded games.

---

Also, have you ever played a BETA release? Saves made with BETA releases of Harem Hotel typically are NOT usable with stable releases.

Why would you want to overwrite one version with another? Just delete the old version. At least on PCs (Windows and Linux), but probably also on Macs, the save files are stored in two locations to make this work without losing your saves. If for some reason you need to manually preserve the save files (e.g. new PC and not played the game on it yet), just move the subfolder game/saves to some other location, then delete 17.2, unpack 18.2, and then move subfolder game/saves back over the new one.
Overwriting often works without issues, but it can easily lead to severe problems. Not just if you originally had a mod that breaks things if you don't update it. A lot of minor ways in which a developer might change the organization of the game can break if you do this.
