I can't tell you why it has happened, but I can definitely say the issue is not with the games themselves, but rather with your computer. If one game crashes, it is almost definitely an issue with that one game. But if all of them crash, then the issue is definitely with your chosen device. Guests staying at the hotel make you $5/day each, IIRC, unless you've waived their rent (as you end up doing for some of them). As you get closer with the LIs, you'll be able to make pinups with them, and sell them for some money. After a while, you'll be able to clean up the Garden, farm crops there, and sell them at the Farmer's Market for some cash, along with some shroom juice, which you can sell in the slums for more cash. And, of course, once you do get the cash to build the bar, it will start earning its keep.
Early game: city visits for "deliveries" at the bowling alley. Then as danb35 said: pinups if you want to go that route. I personally wouldn't go the garden route simply because of the initial investment is several bar upgrade worth of items. Though once the bar is done, it's decent passive income.
Not immediately, I guess, but second floor for the hotel, the sanctuary, and a few elves get up there in price--and all are necessary in order for the story to progress past a certain point. Though I guess that point is a bit of a way into the story.
2nd floor is "cheap" - Sanctuary isn't needed early on and you should be able to get the bar off the ground before needing it(even if it's not fully upgraded, it's still solid money). I normally restart every version (didn't for v19) and my goto is always: story required store items for Kali -> 2nd floor -> bar and I've never felt like I needed to grind money. With the bowling deliveries, even more so. I haven't sold a pinup of the girls since like v12, they just get saved on the MC's personal computer for personal use
