first of all she is not really the "FMC"... she may have the most screentime, but that's for story purposes. FMC would mean multiple protagonist game, and this ain't it. The MC makes the choices here. Charlotte is a deeply disturbed person with trust issues, and had you've gone through the same shit as her, I bet you'd be hard pressed to trust anyone get close to you ever again.
