The game is unplayable to me. Is this only playable with a controller? I try to click on a button, and it does something totally different, and just progresses through the beginning menu while not doing ANYTHING I attempted to do.

Yes and No. Backgrounds sure look very nice at first glance. But please don't notice the three legged owls or details that look incomprehensible, like you are having a stroke. As backgrounds certainly good enough.
The character art suffers from never looking like the same character. And please don't look too closely either

The AI voicing could be also great, if the AI could get some stage directions and not just droning on in the same tone.
