Be real it's a bit grindy for new players without looking up a guide. One wrong answer to dialogue sends you down the wrong path.

No, you can have sex with multiple people per playthrough. I forget the exact number but it's greater than 5 not including threesomes. Can't begin to explain it as I haven't played in a while. For example Katherine, Ashley, Leah, Amy, Lety, and Vickie can all be done in the same playthrough. More if you include the Liz Katz DLC.
You're right. Sometimes you have to choose between 2 girls. Like Ashley or Madison and I think Brittney or Stephanie. You also have to be careful: Some girls (I think Amy/Brittney) loose interrest in you, when she sees you getting intemate with other girls.

The Unity engine abandoned Mac support a long time ago, so unfortunately there will never be a stable Mac version.

I think you can get to both Ashley and Madison. You can first play aprank and later make it up.
I also woud not be surprised if by now there is a way to get Britney down without having Stephanie dance topless. You have to chose however, if Stephanie is going to get drunk or show her skills as a nurse in training (or something like that).
The game has become a lot more complex since the original story, more options are available.

what would be the best way to have fun in the game? iv done a little bit of following a guide. iv done a little freestyle. main and custom. tried learning some console stuff but didnt spend too much time there either. i cant get the sense of what would be the most fun way to do it. following the guide is pretty annoying but seems like its impossible to progress without doing it.

Me? I like adventure games so this is for me, text adventures were my first adult games. So I find it fun to play the game as it was meant to be, as and adventure game.
Of course it is possible to progress without a guide. The people who wrote the guide did. A guide can help to find items in the house however.
The bad as pect is that you can get into bad ends or game over, other than in most modern adventures.

I would also suggest saving before any choices you feel are important. Save scumming be damned, if it gets you to see everything you want to, who cares?
This way you can keep all your progress without having to redo it in the event you do screw up, the save feature's there for a reason, after all.
