It really depends on the game you´re making, because most games are visual novels and don´t have much gameplay except dialogue choices.

It is hard to pick assign a specific number to it, but generally the game has to fulfill one of three requirements:
  • Relatively fun gameplay
  • Hot twisted kinks
  • Really engaging fresh story
Finding a game with 2-3 of these is what I'm on the lookout for. Generally minigames that are shoehorned in are just a time waster to extend the game, generic stories I've seen too many times so there's better something else. It's definitely difficult to pull off something that blends together gameplay and story well.

It's very hard (maybe impossible) for one person or a very limited team with most likely very limited experience, to create a porn game where "game" part is interesting. It is even harder to then tie the gameplay to the porn itself.
Well, no shit. If a person has very limited experience with writing, chances are they can't write a good story. You can't just say all gameplay-based porn games are bad because most people aren't great game designers. It's like me saying all VN's are bad because most porn skits are written in a shallow manor.

It depends on implementation. Like Stranded in Space works well when it is a kinetic novel but is horrible in the one or two puzzle sections because it is poorly designed and implemented.

I think dialogue choices with consequences can be fun if they're done well and don't lead to stupid game over screens.

A good story is always more important for me but good gameplay just elevates the project much more.

I support this. It's very hard (maybe impossible) for one person or a very limited team with most likely very limited experience, to creat a porn game where "game" part is interesting. It is even harder to then tie the gameplay to the porn itself.
The latest example where the gameplay and porn were tied in a semi-good way is "Karryns prison".
Vaguely insulted by this, but will instead just assume that you haven't looked very hard.

Just because the scene is full of amateur devs using the most accessible tools they can find to make games while having little to no game design or programming background doesn't mean going beyond that and creating something new/better than the average weg is impossible.

Didn't mean to. And not only I haven't looked very hard tbh, but I also have a very niche preference for gameplay in non-porn games: map-painting in EU4, CK3 and that kind; some Rimworld and Kenshi types of games, and heavily modded X-com. So when I wrote that, this was what I kept in mind. My bad for coming here with my "hot takes" :HideThePain:

On the other hand, I took time and tried playing some of the big titles this last month: Subverse, Wild Life, Treasure of Nadia, and Karryns Prison. And only the latest had a porn-game type of gameplay, where the "porn" and "gameplay" were tied together in a cool way.

I could answer any of these questions in the poll. The game will be good if it has good gameplay or good porn (main thing is having some, fanservice) Good porn gives you good emotions, but cannot hold you for long in game. Gameplay holds you in game, but without porn there is no fun.
Most recent: Played Dungeon legion for weeks trying to beat it on highest difficulty, cause game was kinda strict, but real to beat. And visual novel part with big tittied girls for the fanservice (You capture girls there and put them as a guard after few training sessions), 50000 sellings on dlsite... Good game
Karryn's prison for sure makes me sometimes return to this game, because offers unique gameplay and sidejobs, and also with 10/10 visuals.
also there was Bullet requiem, Run-or-rape platformer, playing girl with guns, game has some fun scenes, but what matters is gameplay, upgrading guns and speedrunning and no-damage-taking for S. One of old(2015) games im holding on pc
in Universe treasure i didn't play for porn at all even though there it is. And im not into interspecies scenes. But. Cause it's gameplay was unique for me (I met vampire survivors after this game) spent weeks on hard difficulty.
And because stayed longest in gameplay sided games, im pretty sure it's 75/25.

About porn cided games (VN)
Project myriam - This game is HOT (Super effective). Big titted female protagonist girl in daz3d... However, i usually miss lots of updates before downloading it again, waiting for more content before re-playing it. And then forgetting it again. Though one of the best porn for sure. Same for The Office, however i take them each update (Updates are rare, 4-6 months, but big)

Your poll doesn't specify what kind of gameplay.

a) Pornographic Gameplay
b) Non-Pornographic Gameplay

I always go for A.

Check out a game called Karryn's Prison. It has pornographic gameplay and is extremely fun.

90% story. Without a good story you have nothing. Good story means a realistic one. A story with sex, not the other way. If you want sex, Why read a visual novel? Just go to xvideos and save time lol.

Sick of games where the story is: Fuck your mother, fuck your sister, fuck 15,000 other girls and your penis is like Danny D and the main character only thoughts are to fuck whatever walks.

Yesterday I finished the visual novel "Leap of Faith"... 99% story. The best "game" Ive ever read. Sex was just part of the game, not the other way. There were at least 7 girls you could choose from, you could fuck them or make them your girlfriend.... Its my feeling that most of the people didn't care about game-play or sex-play or sex...the story was main character.

Intertwined is another game that shows what Im trying to say. You can fuck like 20 girls, but its part of a well designed story where the story is the main character and not sex.

Ofcourse its a personal opinon and does not reflect what the majority of the people wants in an adult game. Perhaps I am getting to old...

Not all Porn Games need to be "Visual Novels".
Games can be Games, Novels can be Novels. They have their own Values you can judge them by.
Porn is just the cherry on top.

When it comes to adult games, I generally prefer VNs with a good story and enough choice to give a sense of agency. But then, these days even in non-adult games I tend to chose "story" difficulty if one exists and mostly play for the story (duh) and/or a sense of escapism/discovery.

The are a few exceptions that come to mind (mostly well-implemented sandboxes) but most I would probably enjoy more as VNs. The only example of gameplay I really enjoy in and of itself is the investigation in Deviant Anomalies.

I used to be a VN stan, but I've changed my mind over the past few months.

I still enjoy VNs, but games with more involved mechanics are just more interesting to me. People will say "Oh, I don't wanna play a grind sim, I just wanna jack off." I disagree. Playing porn games is not just about unlocking pictures of boobs and cocks, but about immersing yourself in a holistic experience.

If I'm playing a game about being a CEO of a shady company, I'm not just playing to unlock renders of the sexy secretary naked. I want to engage with the fantasy of being a powerful CEO who uses charisma, money and duplicitous means to get what he wants. The "grind" of gameplay serves to build up that fantasy. Sure, the porn is the ultimate goal, but the context of how you got there is the indispensable spice of the whole experience.

I suspect many are turned off from "gamey" games by the abundance of shitty, low-effort "sandbox" VNs that are poorly designed and have little purpose outside of being a scene selector.

A good erotic game does not distinguish between its sexual elements and its gameplay.
A good erotic game interweaves those two elements as seamlessly as possible.
The "grind" is a symptom of bad game design where the sexual elements are too far separated from the gameplay.
The gameplay doesn't have to be always explicit, but it must always have a connection to the sexual elements of the game.

And to be clear, I do NOT consider "pure" VNs to be games.
A pure VN is a story with pictures and dialogue choices, but no gameplay beyond that.
Shoehorned mini-games don't count if they don't have an overarching effect beyond their own scope.
And even a VN with some gameplay is walking the fringes of being an erotic game by technicality.
When talking about erotic games VNs should be considered as their own genre like you wouldn't compare a single CG to an erotic text.

If by gameplay we mean "meaningful input from the player" then I rate it very highly. To pick an obvious example, something like Good Girl Gone Bad is very much about the smut and the story but what makes it for me is that my clicking of a button meaningfully impacts the way the game progresses. That's what separates a game from reading to me - that my input changes something - whether that be how the world or characters develop or whether we get to the next scene at all.

Another interesting one is The Monastery. It's very much an HTML "click this" game, but rather than grind stats you build up through each day and have to balance your stats. You need to build temptation to get lust, which allows the MC to get loose with their morals and unlock new events, but too much temptation and he'll lose it all. Over time the MC becomes more corrupt. I think it's a great take on things and it makes it much more enjoyable than just clicking x number of interactions till a girl likes you enough.

Even with generic ones, where you just go around building "relationship" or something, I like that it makes it feel as though you're progressing even if it is just a bit of grindy clicking.

I guess I just want to feel like I'm doing something, otherwise I would just watch porn. Still though, it's more about the porn than the game because porn games are pretty limited, so I went 75% porn.

Well i can play game without sex but im not gonna play game without gameplay...

If game is having shit gameplay im simply gonna steal/extract sex scenes and delete game without playing.
If You not planning to make good game simply publish sex content as videos/pictures and dont waste time on making garbage games...

Game as name says must be game...
So first game should have gameplay, and then it would be nice to have sex scenes.

About story... well good game dont need to have story
Most popular games have rly poor story because they are good... and being good game means good gameplay...
Some really popular games have no story at all and are popular :x...

Game must be full of content and things to do, must have good and flexible under player gameplay.

I voted %50 gameplay %50 story etc but, but I don't care if the game is just an rpgm game or unity or whatever software it used. For me, the most important thing is that it should show some good design choices and a well built story.

If the game can only showcase how good artists they are, what's the point of making a video game in the first place? You can just go and open up an account on Deviantart or other websites and showcase your art there.

I believe the game itself should be playable and funny even without the sex scenes.
