Are you playing 14.1? That's a bug I believe in 14. The game automatically makes out like Emily went on the date with John in 14. I think that Nyx may have assumed that most would have let Emily go on the date.
yeah I mentioned that too a a while back that it automatically assumes Emily went on the date, didn't know there was a fix already.
Probably another mistake like in the last chapter when even if you were on good terms with Lexi there was no neutral interaction when you meet her with Lakeyn, either Lexi hated you or you were her boyfriend.
Yesterday I tried a Layla/Elena run, obviously starting with Lexi going out until it turns out she lied, then go with Layla (and Elena). And now at the pizza place Lexi introduces MC to Lakeyn as Layla's boyfriend, then when he leaves there's the revelation that he used to date Lexi.

That's what I mean - it wouldn't get you Melissa plus points like helping Erynn would, it's just there as the trigger to get the scene (because as you say, that's what makes her go off and you go over there to check on her).
Just Iris and Erynn is enough for a Game Over John is gonna kill the MC on that path since he is being a fuck boy with both of his daughters. Ethan won't get to do the job
