Zach is stupid and a creep. His jealousy only makes sense to him, that's the point. He was never with Valeria so feeling like the MC somehow stole her is ridiculous anyway. I've always hated the "I saw her first attitude" that some guys get. A girl can make up her own mind about who she likes and wants. He was already pissing me off with the whole "you need to help me with her" constantly.

He's a very insecure, unhappy idiot who hides behind fake confidence. FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE, his friend comes back, all the girls that Zach likes (Val/Layla/Erynn/Gabi) are immediately into MC, and give him the time of day while acting cold to him. Ethan knows he can use this to his benefit so controls him by promising him girls and money and cars and whatever things a narrow minded young adult wants.

I actually think Zach is one of the more compelling bad guys in the game, I can't wait for Val to kick him in the nuts.

The real answer is that there was meant to more variables to that scene other than whether John or Val does the rescuing and Zach was only facilitating a meeting between MC and Ethan rather than straight up betraying him, but Nyx decided not to go forward with a planned plot so that forced it to be a betrayal on all paths.

But to play devil's advocate here's a potential offscreen conversation:

Ethan: How's it going with that girl you like? Did you make your move at the camp.
Zach: I thought it was going well but she friendzoned me.
Ethan: I thought she was into you, what happened?
Zach: I don't know, before the camp I was sure she'd go out with me.
