There is nothing known about Elena and Gabi's past and little to no progress beyond being a boy toy for the latter.
The only backstory for Layla is some guy wanted to date her, she refused and he never relented and started stalking her, but at least she has development.
We've just learned a small part of Val's backstory, but her progress is a slow burn.

It's funny how you mention Alexis' tension is all external, like that isn't the case with all LIs.
Erynn has the blackmail, Alexis, Iris, Mel
Layla has the stalker, Alexis, Elena, Val, Gabi, Tori
Elena has no time to date between cheerleading and babysitting, no need to mention Layla

In fact, I can't think of a relationship in this game where the problems are internal between MC and his partner. All the problems come from outside forces. We haven't even been properly introduced to the next whirlwind of tension, Mr Zane Donovan.

Elena doesn't have much of a backstory that is true, she's just poor and has a more "difficult life".
But she has a current story, she fell in love with the same guy as her BFF, this creates tension and story (yet to fully play out).
PS: A story i don't like btw, it feels forced to be handled in the worst way.

Gabi however was married, most likely to the MCs father, the marriage was bad and they are getting divorced, she's a woman on the rebound, entering a forbidden relationship with a student, majorly out of control with jealosy.
And it's gonna get worst, she still has no idea how bad it's gonna get.
That's proper backstory set up and development, she was out drinking and eager to fuck because of her bad marriage, she keeps doing the "wrong thing" because of the end of her marriage made her vulnerable...
Do you understand now how a good backstory can integrate with what is going on now and can add depth to a story?
Alexis having more than that is a "fact" you say?

This is not what i meant by "external".
The Erynn path has problems that are intrinsical to it.
Ethan, maybe Zane, John, getting over her trauma... these problems are intrinsical to every Erynn playthrough, they are always there.
And she has external problems... the other chicks.

Alexis only has the other chicks, for Alexis to have a problem you have to show interest in Erynn, Iris or Val... there's no problems self contained to her path.

Alexis we know is Erynn's best friend, they hung out occasionally as kids, they shared a first kiss and she was a volleyball player until she was injured.

Gabi has a famous best friend in Ximena(i also would love to see them interact more and learn how they met), but that's just fluff at the moment and haven't made much impact on the story.
Just like Alexis being a former volleyball player hasn't made much impact on the story, she plays volleyball once, great.
It's not a matter of simply listing stuff.

Gabi's failed marriage shapes her current headspace and actions, that is pretty clear, the end of the marriage left her in a vulnerable state, ready for the MC to pick up the scraps.
And it's gonna get even more important when Santiago-Gabi gets revealed.

I take umbrage on the fact that Alexis last 5 years are a blank slate, and that nothing we learn about her gives further significance to her actions.
Other than the stolen kiss she didn't even like at first i guess.

Alexis dating the guy Erynn loves makes the scenario where Erynn is still in love and pining for her friends BF more interesting, not relevant for a solo Alexis run.
And personal opinion, it's making Erynn more interesting, not Alexis, Erynn is the one who has to act completely different because of her feelings, Alexis just acts normally.
Even good scenes for the rivalry, like the beach scene, had no consequences long term, she resets to default(might be worth taking a look at that on the new script).

If Alexis gets more depth in the future that's great, anything we can learn more and help SHAPE THE STORY, awesome.
What was her relationship to Ethan? Does the Erynn and MC closeness bother(the poster should be an opportunity) her? What does she think of Zane? Anything...
Cause right now...
I have been waiting for these things, but Nyx is either delaying it forever or has no plans for it.

But if you are gonna use "volleyball" as a point for Alexis backstory, i think Ximena is worth mentioning.

I do like Gabi and i look forward to learning more of Ximena and Gabi together(even the MC asked how they met, but Gabi dodged the question), if nothing comes and that's the last we see of them together i will be disappointed, if we get some wild interactions, i will be happy.
Right now Ximena is fluff, but can gain relevance in the future if it gets more development.

I know what is making Gabi tick and i've explained it numerous times by now... last time, don't ask me again.
Gabi is going through a tough divorce, she found solace and cock on a young boy during a night of drinking, nothing very deep here.
This boy happened to be a student from her school(we can guess there's more to come, but that's all she knows at this point) which makes the relationship forbidden.
In her vulnerable state(her failed marriage impacting current events) she keeps going back to him.
Her vulnerability impacts her better judgement, she keeps making mistakes and is becoming increasingly attached and jealous of this boy.
The backstory shapes current events.
If you still aren't getting how her backstory enhances and explains current events, just ignore this section, please...

I dislike the Alexis path because i think Alexis lacks depth as a character and the path is low on conflict and tension.
Adding extra depth and conflict would be a good thing for me, it would make more entertaining.
A tumultous backstory could be a way to do that, it's not the only way, but a possible way to add that.

With this perceived lack of depth and this big blank space of 5 years just infront of me, you bet i wanna fill that with as much shit as possible
Of course that doesn't sit well with people like you who enjoy having a "problem free route".

The only LIs who have backstory are Erynn, Iris, Nikki (we see her ex) and Valeria's was recently explored. There's nothing for Alexis, Elena or Cara. Layla could go either way as we know she has a stalker.

I don't think we really need "The Silmarillion" of every LIs past.

Elena has a backstory, she spends most of her time either hanging with Layla or taking care of her brothers. Her reason for not having a love life and explained pretty well methinks

Nyx (through Darryl) seems to be hinting at some kind of cover up for someone influential and powerful.

I doubt it at the point in the story. I do think that Nyx should have fleshed out Lexi's character a bit more. It's easy to get on to her path as she literally throws herself at you twice, well three times if you've accepted once.
In a way Tori get's alot of hate for her quite pushy interactions with the MC. Inviting him to go and fuck in some alley, but that's not much different to Lexi really.

yeah Slexi was the easy LI, sort of, besides the Erynn drama. And I don't particularly want that kinda new branch anyway, not that it would bother me in itself, just would be more shit on our plate that will never get resolved (see Lucas, who was never heard of again but could still come back)

I think Lexi gains affection with the softer approach and the fact that you can easily reject her offers, whereas with Tori you almost have to dive into Layla's path to avoid her XD
