Don't know about Japan but admittedly the western adult community have a lot of scammers like Icstor, PsychoDelusional , MrZZ, Gumdrop, Whootch and so on and so forth.
This is mainly because of patreon's subscriber system which is pay without beeing sure if you get something for it.

Japanese games arent outdated, they focus on FUN over everything else, thats alot better than the micro transaction/lootbox filled western game market. Graphics are a important part of games, fun aswell.
Red Dead Redemption 2 for example is the game with the most details and amazing graphics, physics & everything plus it makes so much fun.

By art you mean handdrawn art ? if yes, yeah handdrawn art is timeless but we have it here in the west aswell some are: Summertime Saga, Confined with Godesses, Amity Park, Something Unlimited & The Manor which just looks a lot better than melted candles (japanese games)
Koikatsu have only a character creator & sex animations thats what Wild Life also have but in much better and if more time passes it will become a open world rpg porn game.

Got the game downloaded and the BR1 installed via torrent from the BR website. Game runs without any issues, but none of the mods are working. I can't get anything to show in chara creator for demosaic, nothing in settings for resize toggle or any of the mod toggles, nothing. It's as through it's only the base game (with the fully playable story, mind you. So it's not just the trial version to the best of my knowledge). Am I missing something?

This is a whole new game from Illusion. As for Steam, most likely not for a while. I'd recommend waiting if you don't want to do a direct install to your computer, or don't like dealing with really rough machine auto-translations. It's fun so far, though.

R1 is basically the bare minimum slapped together, and requires a little know-how to actually get working. Resize is disabled by default, press F1 to open up plugin settings. The demoniac is working(outside of males, who are still mosaiced for some reason.) , however since none of the framework for selecting genitalia is in place it makes them look like barbie dolls instead. R2 will be the "proper" release, this one is just the framework there for people that want to download now for later use.

Most likely in 1-3 days, the game hasn't even been out for 24 hours yet, gotta give modders time to port over their mods. The game itself is built with a newer version of Unity, and it apparently completely broke old shaders so those might take longer.

Personally I want fully rendered 3d graphics or action h games. Never been a fan of either renpy or rpgm type VN games, I don't feel in control of the sex in those type of games. Wildlife is a step in the right direction but their development pace is so slow that entire next gen game engines are coming out faster than them. HS2 neo has sandbox which is appreciated but I think I'll give modded Skyrim a shot for my H action fix.
