Hey there peeps,

I just remembered that I said I would be posting Dev Updated of the new Game on this Thread since it doesn't have it's own yet. So here is an information dump for it.

devdiary_s.png

Holy crap. Is it November already?

Progress
My normal job demanded a bit extra this week, and that stole a few evenings of development. Luckily it doesn't happen too often - I think this is the third time over two and a half years of making this it has. From 2023 that's guaranteed to never ever be a problem ever again as you might know, I'm going full-time dev from January 1st.
Numbers are at 617 story renders, while animations had a week of a standstill at 1,701 frames.

Free Roams
I also took a deep dive into Ren'Py this week and started working on the free roams. I know there are split opinions about free roams in these games. Sometimes they more or less pause the story while adding some interactivity. I want them to serve a purpose in, and shape, the story. Try looking at it as a more advanced way of giving you a straightforward menu choice saying "1. Go to Jane" and "2. Go to Jill" - which can lead to some interesting experiences along the way to either "Jane" or "Jill" - if you reach any of them at all.

Re-Renders
Without getting all too technical, I talked earlier about changing the skin of everyone to pbr-shader. For some reason, I couldn't quite get one of the girls right, so I decided to switch back to sss-shader and redo all her renders. It matched well with my having to put in extra time at my normal job, as it was rendering while I was doing so.
Below are the two different versions, and I have to admit they are more alike than I thought they were, but still, I would love to hear your comments if you prefer the light lipstick one or the dark. At least I'll know if I did the right thing in re-rendering them. :) - and yeah, it's a gif, so rip quality.

4090 - again...
Also got the third 4090 this week, and what do you know... I just can't get two of them into one cabinet! All the connectors at the bottom of the motherboard are in the way of the lower card. I do suspect that these connectors are not all needed or have alternative ports they can connect to (front USB panel, CPU fan, power/reset button, lights, etc), so I'll give it another more serious try with the motherboard diagram in hand one day.

Anyway, we have another weekend ahead of us. Make it a nice one, and stay safe out there.

This week has mostly been spent working on the main free-roam renders of the episode. To give you a rough idea of its size, it spans over three floors, and I've been working my way through the first one counting more than 30 unique characters in it so far. The chance you're going to leave that place with a girl for some fun is rather high if that's your goal. But there are many other outcomes too.

I'll continue working on it for the next week, and I'll also start focusing on the animations again. So far I've been holding back on the Ren'Py part as I know Tom (the creator of Ren'Py) has been working on some functionality that I had planned to make, but when it becomes a part of the software instead that is always preferable.
New character introduction. Meet Sergei.

Okay, just so you know, he's not your sidekick, but if there's anything you need, he's your man. Well, at least as questionable dealings go. Need some hack'o'tronic device that can help you in some way? He's got it. Feeling alone and in need of some female company one night? Call Sergei. Of course, the quality of said services can be questionable at times, but he would say that's part of the charm. He also would say; special price, just for you.

But for the love of God, stay away from his special girl. Because we don't play these games for the special girls, right?
ps: yes, you can exclude him completely from the game if you want that. It will shape your character though.

That's it for now. Have a pleasant weekend, and stay safe out there.

Progress
Another week where I've been working on the big free-roam. The most exciting news this week was my neighbor building a house and unintentionally cutting the power for everyone in the street.

While he was nice enough to apologize and buy flowers for pretty much everybody, it did cause a slight delay.

Numbers are at about 776 story renders plus about 100 I don't count due to them being used as sprites, background movement, and similar. Animations took a backseat for this week too, but I really want to start working on the Ren'Py part and will probably set up quite a few animations so that they can render while I do scripting and dialogue.

Preview

The blonde in the image above this is delightfully crazy. But then again, you know what they say about crazy.
Wibble does it again

For you who dabble around in Daz Studio, Wibble's (world-famous architect) car, Zirael Flyte, is now . You might recognize the lady too.

Steam Award Nomination (story) for Leap of Faith
If you own Leap of Faith on Steam, you might see a Steam Award Nomination post for the game in your library in the next few days. If you liked the game, I hope you consider giving it your vote. I know I'm just a micro developer compared to the big companies, and I know I won't win anything, but it would be nice to put AVNs on the map and show they can actually contain more than just animated genitals, landladies, and roommates.

Hardware (again)
I spent a few hours this morning disassembling my main computer, re-arranging the cables and connectors in the hope I could get the second 4090 fitted. And even though my 4090s are 3-slot cards, the same as my motherboard, they simply won't fit. So now that's tried and tested fully, I'll accept defeat and won't be fiddling around with it anymore.

On the positive side, the new Nvidia driver which was released yesterday now works 100% with the 4090, and I could once again use Dforce when setting up the scenes. Couldn't be happier about it.

With that settled, I go into the weekend with a huge smile on my face, and I certainly hope you do too. Stay safe out there.

I've been stretching myself in all directions this week and made progress on all fronts. I completed two scenes on the story render side, caught up on the custom renders for the top Patreon tier, and right now animations are rendering none stop while I'm working on the Renpy part.

Also finished 'designing' another girl as you can see above, and I'm very happy with the way the pbr shader help enhance the skin and bring so much life to these models (I've attached the 4k version to this post so you can see what I mean). That also means I'm well on my way to completing all the 12 girls in the story. Remember that you will be able to help design one of them by polls. This will be sometime after the release of episode 1. That way you have an idea of who's in the game already, and what you'd like to see more of.

My girlfriend dragged me out for Christmas shopping too this week, but it was on the promise that what we didn't complete, we would shop online. So that part is done. Win-win. :p

I haven't got any numbers to show for, as this week's renders are still in my render cloud and I haven't had time to go through them and decide on the keepers and throw-aways yet.

Got a bit of that 'chilled'n'clogged' feeling right now, but I'm hoping it's just the season and not a cold coming. Although I've got enough animations queued up for a week so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I need to sleep off a fever and relax for a few days.

A few hours ago, Leap of Faith reached 50,000 sales on Steam. That is 49,000 more than I hoped for when releasing it. I know some of them are from you, who are here on my Patreon. Once again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to make these stories and giving me the freedom to buy the 3d assets and music I feel is needed to enhance them.

Have a nice weekend whether you're working, relaxing, having a cold, or Christmas shopping. Stay safe out there.

Animations have been running almost none stop this week. While they were rendering, I've been focusing on the Ren'Py part and got a decent chunk done. Numbers are at 860 story renders and 3,474 animated frames.

I wanted to tell you a bit about what -u4ia- will be like, now that I'm getting into the real scripting part of it and see that it's achievable in the way I planned it out.

u4ia is more like a game than Leap of Faith, and will consist of three types of 'modes'. Each chapter will consist of all these three modes at different stages of the episode.

1. Path mode
In path mode, you choose your path through the current scene. Different events take place as you move forward through the scene. In short, moving from 'A' to 'B' (or 'start' to 'finish' depending on the scene), you choose your path along the way, and who to interact with. They play out like a normal visual novel but are designed to give you great choice in who to spend time with or what to do. Meaning, exiting a path mode will differ greatly depending on your choices. Due to this, it's impossible to see all content in one or two playthroughs.

2. Free roam
In free roam, you can move around as much as you like until you've completed one or several required tasks, or the time runs out. Do note that "time runs out" doesn't mean you have to be fast (in real-time), but there's a certain amount of things you can do before something happens, giving you a chance to plan things out.

3. Story mode
In the story mode parts, you experience the story first and foremost. This is the same as you did in Leap of Faith with conversations, story reveals, cutscenes, etc. Story mode has fewer choices, but does differ depending on your earlier choices.

When finishing a path mode event, or a free roam, you can save it with the choices you just used to play through it. That means you can re-play the story at a later time in full story mode with your earlier choices intact. A 'create your own story' of sorts.

There are 12 girls in the story. Four of them are important, four less important, and four of them, well, without revealing too much, you will have to choose at some point. :)

Okay, better get back to it. Have a nice weekend. Take care and stay safe out there.

I've been talking about taking some time off after Leap of Faith, and nothing came off it. On this Monday, I woke up to a particularly awful message about me and the game, and although I've got quite hard skin against opinionated comments differentiating from my own, this one really hit home.

I normally appreciate different opinions and welcome them, but this was very hateful and derogatory - a very personal attack not only against me but also against the inspiration for the game which you all probably know by now.

As mentioned, I've got plenty hard enough skin for this to normally bounce right off, but since it didn't, it made me think that we're just shy of one month from three years that I've been doing this, and all those three years I've never taken any time off rather than a sporadic day here and there.

So in the wake of that message and my reaction to it, I decided to take the week off and power everything down including myself, and I felt it was a very good decision.

I will be back to work on the game Sunday morning, and I am looking forward to it. But now I'm enjoying the time off with the missus, as she will be offshore during Christmas. Though in case I decide to take any real vacation in the future, I will let you know beforehand and pause the Patreon billing.

With that said, I hope you enjoy the weekend too, and I'll be back with a normal update next Friday.

Stay safe out there.

// Drifty

First of all, thank you very much for the kind and heartfelt messages I got in response to the last dev diary. I know that there are always people who will not see eye to eye with the story I wanted to tell with Leap of Faith or how I went about it, but you certainly put a smile on my face.

Other than that, it's pretty much back to normal for the development on u4ia for this week. I've started the more fun scenes, to which I've been posing animations, and they are running as we speak. Next week I have to focus a bit on the Christmas customs for the top-tier supporters so it's nice to have the render rig working on animations as I do that.

The girl up there is the last girl I designed for now, and plays an important role in the story. That means you will meet 10 of the 12 girls in the first episode of u4ia. One of the last two girls you will be able to design by Patreon votes for episode 2.
I'll be back with one more Christmas update next Friday, and once more before the new year arrives.

Have a BaD weekend (well, not literally, but if you have a bit of experience with AVN's, you know what I mean) :)

// Drifty

It's the last post of the year, and this time I'll tell you a bit about getting music for the new game. It's more informational and meant for other AVN developers and those who wonder what's going on. Jump to the end to skip it.

Music Licensing
In all of December, I've been having talks with Premiumbeat about using their song library in my next game, u4ia, as I really wanted to get this expense on this year's budget.

I read through their terms and conditions and there was nothing there about adult content. So I contacted Premiumbeat and asked directly, telling them what my game was about. They confirmed I was ok to use their music in my game.

Though their license only cover 1,000 downloads which isn't enough, and they sent me over to their 'enterprise license' seller.

I went through the whole talk with this new guy once more, and he also confirmed that I could use the music for my game without breaking any terms. In the end, we agreed on a fixed price for 75 songs.

Later he sends me the contract for signing, and there's the usual yadayada - agree to conditions and so forth. However, I notice that the link to the terms is not the same as Premiumbeat. Instead, it's Shutterstock's terms and conditions. I also notice that the enterprise edition seller isn't from Premiumbeat at all, but Shutterstock (who ultimately owns Premiumbeat).
So I checked the terms (and the link was not clickable, I had to type the whole address into the address bar), where it states it can clearly not be used for pornographic use.

There was more back and forth between me and the seller, and at long last, I get confirmation from the Shutterstock legal department where they say it was up to me to define if my content is pornographic or not.

The legal definition of porn is "The representation in books, magazines, photographs, films, and other media of scenes of sexual behavior that are erotic or lewd and are designed to arouse sexual interest". While vague and open to interpretation or claims that the sex scenes serve the story, it further states the following: "ultimate sex acts" and "masturbation, excretory functions, and lewd exhibition of the genitals."

In other words, my games are clearly porn pr. legal definition. So is almost every other adult visual novel out there.
As a word of warning to anyone using (or planning to use) Premiumbeat, their content can not be used for adult visual novels/games. Although Premiumbeat's license terms do not have a porn clause, the enterprise edition at Shutterstock has, which would be the only viable license to use for a game. I am choosing to tell you all this because I know a lot of games use Premiumbeat for their game(s), all the way up to the highest-grossing games.

It's a whole lot of time lost discussing with a seller who is more eager to sell in order to gain his provision than actually stating facts. Much like buying a car, and the seller only answers your questions with what you want to hear.

In the end, it's back to square one on the music part, but this time I'll do the same as I did for Leap of Faith and contact every musician individually. It's more work, but the result is a more diverse and professional soundtrack.

Happy New Year!
Once again I have to give you all a thank you for supporting me while making this. If you hadn't, Leap of Faith wouldn't even be finished yet. Yesterday was also my very last day at my day job, and I am now doing this full-time.

Next week I'll be back to normal updates with render numbers and some specifics about what u4ia is all about - what you can expect from it when it comes to story and content.

Thank you for 2022, and I can't wait to show you what I got in store for you for 2023.

Take care, and stay safe out there.

// Drifty

The first post of the new year, and I have to tell you it's still weird not having to drive anywhere to work. But it's nice looking out the window at the neighbor de-icing his car and not having to do that.

I said I would give you a little insight into the new game U4IA, so here it is, trying to spoil as little as possible in the process.

Synopsis
You've been having a pretty shitty life so far, and a friend of yours recommends you travel to this island in the Caribbean in an attempt to escape from your past, somewhere you can start anew.

This island, while off the grid and seemingly paradise on earth, holds its own secrets. It's not only you who are trying to get away from something. The inhabitants might not be all that they seem like.

On this island, you'll meet a lot of girls of course. They too have their own reason as to why they are there. They all are trying to escape or find something or someone, and just want to live life to the fullest and have fun.

You should definitely try to form some sort of friendship with these, as the ghost of Christmas past will most certainly come knocking on their doors, all at once. Get close to them, and learn more about their past. Potentially also prepare.

But whether you're looking for romance or just fun, you will definitely find it. Especially on an island popularly nicknamed Euphoria.

Character building
You will be able to build your MC through a talent tree, gaining perk points as you advance through the game. The perks you choose through the talent tree will last until the end of the game. At the start of every episode, you can alternatively sacrifice a talent perk point for a temporary 'observant' buff that will help you notice things you would not have noticed otherwise. This buff lasts one episode and you will have to sacrifice another talent perk point in the next episode keep it up.

Age
The MC is at the beginning of his 20s. The girls range from freshly dinged 18s to milf.

Progress
I've been rendering animations almost none stop the last few weeks, and that worked almost perfectly with the holidays and a lot of family visits and dinners. So far we're at 951 story renders and 6,558 frames of animation. In total, I'd say I'm about halfway there. The second half should be quicker to do than the first half, as the holidays are behind us, and some of these locations/scenes I've finished have been really draining on both me and pushing my GPUs and RAM to the limit.

For more specifics, I've finished about 13 scenes (excluding the 10 or so different roam locations), 3 free/path-roams, 4 lewd scenes, and one additional more humoristic type of lewd. As mentioned earlier, there are 12 romanceable girls, and a whole lot of other people (where you can have a bit of fun with some of those girls too).

To add to the synopsis above, you won't really know who all the 'good girls' are until later. Some might be there for reasons other than your well-being.

Next week
For the next week, my full focus will be on story renders while I also try to deep dive into the music selection, or at least create a decent list of musicians to contact.

Unfortunately, with the Premiumbeat deal falling through last week, my plan for you to have a big diverse range of music to make your own playlists that would last all throughout the game took a hit. But I'll try to make up for it with more tailored music for the different scenes.

Hopefully, that should shed some light on the development for now. Have a nice weekend and stay safe out there.

// Drifty

I've only been doing story renders this week, and have been working myself through some really enjoyable scenes.

I love making these scenes where you spend some time together with the girls one on one and get to know them a bit better.

Most of the time it's not that they are actually sharing past secrets, but the way they react to you telling some of yours. This is something I used in Leap of Faith too when you sit on the bench with Cece in the park and she starts crying. I think it's a much better way of getting to know the girls and how they are as a person, rather than giving an exposition dump in form of verbal information.

I gave the content made so far a rough playthrough, and I was not happy with the pacing. Things were moving too fast and too much happening at once. So I decided to up the amount of content in each episode. In LoF, each chapter covered two days, but that is simply not enough time for U4IA. So in order to make each episode feel like an actual episode story with a beginning, middle, and end, each U4ia update will cover at least 3 days in-game.

Converting that to actual content should be about double the size of the average LoF chapter, which should also work well with the planned Steam seasons consisting of four episodes each. Current finished work is 1,109 story renders and 6,558 frames of animation.

Next week I'll keep working on these one-on-one scenes, and when they are done I should be able to start looking for that small sparkling light that tells me there's an end to the tunnel somewhere.

Lots of work to do still, but lots of fun doing it.

The preview picture this time is from the lovely Teagan. Sometimes you do a bunch of renders, but don't see the obvious mistake until after you're done (her eyebrows). Oh well, load, correct, re-render.

Also thanks to Wibble for helping me separate the front of her dress so I could give her a little wardrobe accident which is slightly visible in the image.

Have a nice weekend, and stay safe out there.

// Drifty

This week was a bit of an all-types-of-work week.

I spent some time in Premiere Pro with post-production on the animations that have finished rendering, and that's when I noticed that some of the more 'wigglier' parts of the girls which I had animated, didn't wiggle anymore.

You see, Daz is a good program for doing a lot of things, but it comes with quite a few quirks. When I save a file on my posing rig and load it into the render-rig for the actual rendering, there's a huge possibility that some morphs/movements didn't save. So that leaves me with quite a checklist to go through before starting the actual animation rendering. And now, I had to add one more thing to that checklist, because no wiggle animations saved.

So I'm in the process of re-rendering those animations, and they are just about done. It won't cause a delay, because I have decent hardware power and I expect it to eat through the current render queue quite fast.

Part of developing this is also learning new things, so I did quite a bit of testing on the latest generation 3d figure from Daz, the Genesis 9 model. I was impressed by some aspects of the model, and decided to redo one of the girls I had made (but not yet started to use) as a Genesis 9 model. You'll meet in u4ia. Here she is.

So why haven't I converted all the figures to Genesis 9?

The actual conversion from Genesis 8.1 (the current characters) to Genesis 9 is a bit finicky and extremely time-consuming. There's no 'one-click conversion' software available, and skin maps are completely different. The amount of content available for Genesis 9 is also sparse. Finally, I also have to convert all hair, clothing, poses, and even facial expressions. Hopefully, I can take the full step into Genesis 9 at some point, but for now, you can at least enjoy one of the girls in u4ia as Genesis 9.

I love the content I've made so far, and I can't wait to show it to you. Unfortunately, there's still quite a bit to do before I can release the chapter with a full consistent story. But the guys are all waiting to meet you; Gina, Paige, Teagen, Jack, Lars, Sea (remember her?), Ana, Deedee, Elektra, Geneva, Nikita, Sergei, Lin, Anita, Nyah, Siwan, Eudora, Synne, Celeste, Aidan... and many others.

All the best, and stay safe out there.

Finished my first playthrough on this game yesterday. I really enjoyed it. Very emotional, just how I like my VNs LOL. The Dev's depiction of Cece's depression was spot on.

Just finished first playthrough, awesome VN. Massive issue for me though… I’ve fallen for Cece so hard that it’s incredibly difficult for me to complete any subsequent playthroughs without looking at her with that longing. I’ll probably just do Steph and maybe Holly/Lexi and that’s it?

Cece is just too fucking awesome it’s not even funny.

Same here, felt unenthusiastic to go through anyone else's route. From a different perspective though, both the Stephanie and Lexi routes are in my opinion, really well-done and interesting. It's just that Cece's route is SO GOOD that it makes it seem less. Wasn't a huge fan of Linda and Robin/Kira's routes although they were fun characters.
