Doesn't work for me no matter where I use it. It would have been quite the bullshit if it would only work at camp. A sewing kit is meant to be used while travelling to allow minor repairs on clothes. Otherwise that item should get removed and you can either repair clothes at stores, who can make new clothes for the player, or a workbench in the tent. X3
Might be wrong on this and I don't have time to test it at the moment but I believe for the sewing kit to work they need to be at full hp when you use it. Not sure on the location but at the point where I am at which is pretty much having finished the beta and doing some side stuff just resting seems to clear my chars of the distressed state and I believe repair their stuff. The sewing kit far as I know is supossed to work as an on field item to use but again I might be wrong.

Farah still has the Silver Surfer Syndrome after getting hurt and rather cries on the ground instead of acting normal. Every other female gets their normal stance back. So I did some crazy brain work done and... switched Farah out. Are you proud of me?! xD
You interact with the large map either by leaving the castle and go left where the soldier tents are or in your own room. There you have the option to hire more troops (harp symbol), liberate existing areas (two crossed swords), do bounty hunts that appear in your mail box (wanted poster) or search for forging material (map and stone symbols) and perhaps find a hidden stash.
You must liberate grand bridge that leads to the imperial manor. After that you can visit the place and recruit someone you have met before. This will unlock the bar in the castle.
