If Nao is playing Ami and Sensei is playing Maya in this fever dream, does that mean Nao is showing these things to someone else, someone who is filling Sensei's original role? Perhaps it's too much to hope for, but I'd love a return of Maya dressed as a clown.

That's the main issue.
At the beginning of chapter 4, and after the end of AUTO-PILOT, I thought we would finally get some answers, explore the inner-world of Kumon-Mi, and discover the rules that command it. Push Sensei towards the unknown. The motivation and reason is simple: save Prime Maya
As I said before, even if he finds nothing, at least he tried. But not even that. Instead all we get is Sensei waiting for the answers to fall on his lap, while he does nothing.
In chapter 4 I expected worldbuilding and character development from Sensei.
Instead what I got is just your average, hollow harem sex game that I can easily find in this website.
More than anything, it feels like I'm reading badly written LiL fanfiction, with no care for how the characters truly are or their interpersonal relationships.
Ok I am exaggerating with that last sentence, but I do see some cracks in what were supposed to be well-written characters with beliefs and goals.

I mean, I wouldn't exactly say the game is super scary or anything, mostly it's more of a mystery and a playthrough will probably run you 150+ hours so the actually spooky scenes are relatively few and far between. I suppose different people have different thresholds for that kind of thing though so maybe others would disagree lol
Regardless, the supernatural/divine elements are woven pretty tightly into everything else, you can't really divorce them from the rest of the game (especially lately). They're a key aspect of the setting and plot, and they play into many characters stories to varying degrees - very heavily into the protagonist's. If you don't want to suck it up and give the game a go then you're just gonna have to pass I'm afraid, I don't think what you're asking for here is really possible and if it is I doubt anyone will ever be inclined to make it happen (certainly Sel won't).

It can be gross, disturbing, etc... but scary? It's just words, nothing to be afraid off.
If you get really immersed into the story, you can get some «chills» when something happen, but that's it.

no. no it CAN be scary. at least if you're like me and have fucked up empathy that's way too deep for what are essentially screenshots on a screen. I'm aware of it and I hate it, I end up caring to the point where I sometimes just cannot continue playing a game because of some story developments that.. hurt just a bit too much.
everyone experiences things differently.

You could say the same thing about literally any kind of horror media; a horror book is just words, a slasher flick is just a guy with a toy knife and a ton of corn syrup, a creature feature is just a guy in a suit or some CGI, etc. They're all things many people find scary.
I'd generally say that games are the most understandable thing to be scared by in most cases - not only do they blend elements of both books and movies but most people generally find them more immersive which helps with the suspension of disbelief.

I feel really validated reading some of the criticism that's been said here regarding Ch4's writing and the state of the game as a whole. I was already losing the last of my good faith towards Sel's writing during Ch3 but the ending somehow managed to hook me back in, but Ch4 has been nothing but the worst of the worst and now I can't imagine anything he does will make me enjoy the game again. But hey, hate-reading it with my partner is pretty fun in of itself.
