I agree with you, Naughty does know when he will finish, part of the year probably, more precisely not.
I think if he knew from the beginning that it would take him that long, he would make it different. Probably trying to split it or postpone some parts to next release.
I think he didn't know, or he added something that complicated the developing process way too much.
When I remember his advances from beginning, it looked OK, but from mid October it slowed down drastically. If somebody asked me last year in September, I would say that release would be around Christmas or New Year.
