Just got the Steam version. There's a Beta track which, if it operates the same way as other Betas I've added, means all the incremental updates will be included as the game develops. For a one off payment of around $10 that's not a bad deal. Base game, updates, and support the dev in a small way.

The dev has a track record of complion. So, low risk.

Season 3 they have to split up, into 4 groups,
which gives us space to meet new allies and new LIs

We'll travel to the north to Freja's homeland and meet the Vikings!

next season we'll go east to Ishi's homeland and meet the Samuraii!
In the mean while the elven girls have convinced the elves to join as well.

and after that seaons 5 we'll face Lilith with our 4 armies together, humans, elves, vikings and samurii!! will be epic!

Probably to differentiate more that Vikings and Samurai are new factions, otherwise it would be just humand, elves and ... more humans and even more humans.

It's been a year since the last update; is the game abandoned? I also saw that season three is supposed to start soon, but season two isn't even finished. How am I supposed to play the game now to follow the story chronologically? Or did they just make a mini-story and abandon the main game?

I spent a few minutes surfing through their Itch.io and announcements, they didn't abandon anything. They finished season 2 and the "side game" Valhalla was always advertised as Lilith Rising 3 for awhile. That game picks up after season 2 as a standalone.
