Yeah it's weird. Imagine if movies did this ROFL. Like Titanic or Mission Impossible.
Actually:

Hardcore Henry
The film is notable for being shot entirely from the first-person perspective of its lead character.

There's always ONE example that goes against the custom. There is a reason that it's not the default.

I don't mind the half-face obscuring personally and I can see the rationale.

Besides letting players roleplay themselves, it also saves time from having to make facial expressions for the protag. And since everyone's tastes and opinions of what a 'good guy' looks like differ, it also saves itself from that debate and let people imagine it on their own. Some people think guys with a semi-bodybuilder build looks good, some don't. Some think dudes with long ass L'Oreal Thor hair looks good, some don't, etc.

Lots of good perks there.

One example is Where It All Began, dev remade the game from scratch and the protag grew long ass L'Oreal hair with a Chad built face and that turned me off too but some people liked it apparently. :HideThePain:

I also don't see a problem with the kissing scenes in game at all, seems to be fine and it's intentionally made to look 'innocent' w/ the daughter because of the theme and all like how she's inexperienced.

I kinda dig the obscure MC face thing, its gives a sense of mystery, like reading a book.
There's also the fact that we don't have 100% confirmation that the daughter is the daughter, but if she really is biological and the MC just has zero resemblance to her whatsoever... :HideThePain:

And on another case, if he has zero resemblance then that also pretty much ruins immersion and the mystery behind if she is really the daughter.

Making the face half-obscured is mostly perks and bypass a lot of challenges.

Not to mention if I am black, it is extremely hard to imagine my head in the MC's torso...
The point is the protagonist's identity is deliberately hidden, with only half the face visible it makes one pay less attention to the main character's appearance than you would have if there was a fixed image of the protag in your head.

I don't even pay attention to the main character's appearance as much because of that and only focuses on the game itself, which is why it's easier for players to put themselves in the protagonist's shoes if the protagonist has no fixed identity. You just subconsciously look past the 'template' appearance in the game.

Why is that if I may ask?
Isn't the well-written character good for immersion rather than soulless empty NPC?
As sad as it sounds: yes.

The more character traits an MC has, the less likely they will be similar to your (the player's) own and therefore the less likely it is that self-inserting will work.

Which does not mean anything about how much I like a character or game / story. A story with a well-defined MC will probably be better.

Interesting point of view.

Personally when the game has well-written characters (not only MC), good story - it all makes it much easier for me to immerse myself into this universe. MC's traits don't have to be the same as yours, after all we play games to have fun and to run away from reality for awhile, to relax, it's about getting emotions.
But I guess it's a matter of perspective after all.

Also I can say that when the game is bad (no story, bad chars), i don't feel any emotions, I don't feel for characters, I don't believe them, they are just empty NPCs - hence I have no desire to immerse myself into this shitty universe.

P.S. Though I admit when MC is a total jerk and creep in a game - I am totally agree with you:oops: No fucking way I am gonna immerse myself.

Except that this is a game with a quite well defined main character which doesn't suit self-inserting at all.

I'm not against self-inserting but this isn't the game for it.
Which makes the choice of not showing the MC weirder.
I don't see him being well-defined at all, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to at least make choices in the game which is exactly what they are for, choices exist for roleplaying; as it stands you have 3 main paths you can choose as the main character regarding Kaylie and some sub-paths with other characters. Devs also say that he has branching paths planned for the future as well.

He has some pre-set background in order to establish the story, but that doesn't mean you can't immerse yourself as the character otherwise the whole RPG genre wouldn't make sense. He's just a married office worker in his 30s, with a dick-control problem. Sounds generic to me.

You also don't need a character with a matching personality as yours irl to self-insert, even moreso when we're talking about video games here and this one in particular that fulfill a certain fantasy that you would never do in real life. You can also talk to netorare enthusiasts about that, since they love to self-insert themselves as the ones doing the cuckolding and most of those characters are jackasses, or in Japanese hentai case: dark skinned jackasses.

Lost at Birth is fairly linear imo, you only control how horny you are.
Even the "corruption route" is still concerned and trying to be a good positive dad, he's just guided by his dick.

On the topic of faces... Personally i never had a problem with self inserting because the guys face is displayed, as far as i'm concerned this is a case of devs overthinking things.

What makes self inserting difficult is when the MC acts dumb by default(unrelated to Lost at Birth before people grab their pitchforks).
Faces aren't my main problem, playing a dumb teenager is... and at times seeing myself in the american inspired High School/college experience.

Back to faces, i do think fully showing the face without restrictions has greater potential in foreplay, kissing, sucking boobies... and showing the couple deep eye to eye in missionary.

Well, it is a porn game.

Most of the eye-to-eye scenes I've seen in Ren'Py are horrible imo unless it's from some distance away, it's like they're looking through each other's souls (non-figuratively). The only good eye-to-eye ones are when they are looking directly at the player (first person perspective) and even then it's difficult to make it look right and not a doll staring blankly at nothingness with you in the background.

Going back to one of my former points, I don't think even with faces it'd have satiate you guys because I think the kissing scenes are deliberately made to be 'tame' because the daughter figure is inexperienced, cute and young.

Yes, it is a problem in this game too. But DAZ has some plugins for that, so he could use that, unless he uses Blender. But even then, you could just have the character look at an invisible object placed in front of the object it should be looking at (like, have Kayley look at the object which is placed close to her father's eyes, when she is supposed to be looking at him). Considering how sophisticated his renders are and his skill with lighting, I think he could do that, it would not be extra difficult.
