It seem that inconsistency in character behaviour is a common issue with L&J as well.
Anna who should be:
MC "Anna is smart and logical and confident."
MC "She's also secretly a lioness."
MC "She will come out swinging when she thinks someone she cares about is being mistreated."
MC "The day she comes to your rescue, you know you're in her inner circle."
Meanwhile we see that she is not particularly confident (maybe she is at work) and does nothing for MC most of the time.
- Tennis dates where Lacey is getting hit on? Takes a while before speaking up and even then never inform MC of what was happening.
- Agrees and schemes on very hurtful plans to MC, Bastion and Lacey trying to "play nice" with Jared.
- Additionally never informs MC that Lacey was going to the parties or that the graphic dept was not working overtime (maybe she didn't know fully).
- She is still friends with Mia, no matter how many times she hurts MC willingly and cruelly, the messages are one of the biggest and most evil thing someone could do to her best friend and to a person in general, they garner exacty one llittle week of not speaking which is then peddled as "petty".
So she blows up against Lacey in two situations, one with Lorenzo, which is kind of unjustified after all she let go through already, and the second one after Bastion, a plan SHE HERSELF GREENLIGHTED:
A "Okay. We'll do our best to support you."
We never see her blow up against Mia seriously, aside from some off screen stuff which was probably retconned in because her first reaction to the messages was this:
A "I... I read those terrible things you wrote to him."
A "I was very, very angry at you Mia."
A "I think of you as a friend, but..."
A "what you did was not okay."
And her reaction to Mia going on about her pimpin' past was this:
A "Mia. You know damn well this is mostly your fault."
A "Why do you insist on trying to sneak in things about Lacey's past every chance you get?"
A "You're going too far."
A "Well work on it soon."
Compare this to the blow up about the Lorenzo encounter #1:
A "Your husband is out there."
A "Waiting for you, like he always does."
A "And Mia is having to explain everything to him for you."
A "Again."
A "You never do."
A "And yet it keeps happening, doesn't it?"
A "You keep hurting him."
A "The first thing out of your mouth to that man should have been, 'I'm married'."
A "'Please leave me alone right now'."
A "That's it. That's all you had to do."
A "Instead we have to spend time looking for you and texting you."
A "Only to find you in the restroom, talking to this man that you apparently hooked up with in college."
A "Is that a great look Lacey?"
A "I am at my limit."
A "How much longer will it be before the 'mistakes' you keep making end up going too far."
A "How many times will this happen before we walk in on you 'mistakenly' having sex with a man?"
A "Because you didn't realize that was something you shouldn't do."
A "I cannot continue to watch you do these stupid, selfish things."
A "If you don't get your life figured out, I will take [MCFirst] from you."
A "Not share him. Take him."
A "I will spend every hour of every day getting him to fall in love with me."
A "I will pack everything up and we will leave this damn city."
A "And leave you as far behind as I possibly can."
Quite a difference, yes?
Then how is it possible to reconcile all this without an explanation (or several apologies) with how she is described? I have a hard time with it, and so do many other folks I had the chance to tallk with.
I won't even start again about Mia....well maybe just a little.
MC "Once Mia knows you're cool about something, she will totally step it up."
MC "It's her love language to poke and prod to see if she can make you squirm a little."
"Which is good, because she knows how to make me smile."
"The only girl I know that perfectly blends sweet and vulgar into one personality."
This is how she is described...she makes MC smile...the woman who ruined his loved one's life...makes him smile....GRRRRREAT!
Mia isn't vulgar, she is just obnoxious and disrespectful, you can't try to make her sweet with literally 2 hugs and some gaslighting.
The messages are written in an extremely hurtful way, containing wrong information that seriously ruins MC trust (already at all time low) in his wife, but she is sweet.
She tries to break them up again, this time with drugs too! But she is sweet! She never meant to hurt anybody!
Instead of being fucking ashamed and maybe show some care towards MC during his king weekend she callls him bitch if he gets something wrong (to be clear I only got one answer wrong in my first playthrough and that was from Veronica), tries to steer the activities her way, keeps on bringing up Lacey's past (in front of her boss too! two birds with one stone) and we discover that she is so disrespectful and unhinged that she stole naked pictures of MC to build a dildo for herself (I will skip the fact that you need a mold to do that).
So we already have 2 mainstay characters that are extremely inconsistent in any player perception.
But they are not the only ones, take Christine for example:
M "Hey."
C "(sniff) Whatever."
M "Ooookay."
J "Christine, please be civil."
C "Civil? This disaster is her fault."
M "What are you talking about shortstack?"
C "We saw the text messages you bitch."
M "Wait what?"
C "Yeah. We were trying to find some friends to help us with whatever he's going through."
C "Only to find out this is your fault just as much as his wife's."
M "I really am going to pay for this the rest of my life aren't I?"
C "As you should."
C "Do you two know about his wife's little plan?"
A "Unfortunately yes."
M "We tried everything to talk her out of it."
C "I'm surprised it wasn't your idea."
C "Someone in here needs to defend him."
C "And surely he can't count on these two to do it."
Christine, for the whole Bastion situation, is the MVP, tells things as they are, wants to defend MC and is morally strong.
She calls out the scheming, she is great overall, actually one of the first breaths of sanity in the story up to that point.
Then in act 2 she becomes a schemer too and allies with two people, one she dislike and one that she utterly despises, why?
C "Oh, Mia's great."
C "I'm not enthused about her past."
C "But as I've gotten to know her, she's pretty cool."
Seriously? First of all the player never sees Mia being cool, ever.
She is either scheming, gaslighting, making light of MC pain and feeding off false info which create more issues (you know, if you are not sure 100% about a deicate topic, maybe it is time to stfu).
Not "enthused" about the past? What about the present? What about the messages? What about being ok with Lacey's plans?
Her morph into this sort of softdomme is also pretty weird, she was pretty direct before but in act 2 she starts spewing out orders and treat MC with little respect.
Anyway these are the most glaring to me, but others such as Veronica also fall a bit short sometimes.
