Well, we all have our own tastes in games and I won't try to change yours. If I have the money and people, hell yeah I would make the game fit with my art style, but this just isn't the case. I still find it kinda weird to shy away from a game just because of the pixels though. It's not like I'm asking to fap to it lol (there are other games for that). There must be a deeper reason for that I believe.Lol. It's the complete opposite for me, seeing those fucking pixels always breaks my immersion.
There are a few RPGM games that are heavily modified and actually manage to look good, fe. where the sprites actually look like the rendered characters or the drawings, with that I could see your point, but in this case I really don't think you are doing yourself a favour.
I won't touch a game like this any more and I know many others also completely shy away from PGM games for the same reasons.
Of course it's your game and you should do what you want, but if you want financial support you should consider why some of the more experienced (and successful) devs like ICCreations or ICstor (and some more whose names I can't think off right now), have switched to Ren'py for their new games.
So back to the game engine stuff. There's a bigger player base for Renpy games for sure but I don't think it's because of the engine switch that devs like ICCreations or ICstor are successful. If you look back at their older games, they use RPGM and they were getting a good amount of money (ICstor had like 5k per month if I remember correctly). But the thing is, their CGs or scenes are in 3D, unlike mine. In return, their games feel weird to look at compared to a RPGM game that has 2D CGs. It's more accepted for a RPGM game to have 2D CGs since it's still pretty big in Japan and we've gotten used to seeing them. One thing I learned from art and animation classes is that if not everything fits under one art style, it begins to feel unnatural and that's one dirty bucket of cum. The switch to Renpy definitely helped with that. Why are they so successful then? Probably because they still give out the goods yo. Giving what people want is a good way to stay in business and they are pretty good at that.
In the end, I would use Unity if I could but I'm no programmer. RPGM and Renpy were the two choices I had and I picked the former. Was that the right choice? I don't know, man. I'm not trying to be like those guys up top, because I'm sure there are already others who are going for that. I'm just trying to do my own thing. If I get big doing this, great! If not, then oh well. At least I did what I wanted to do and I'm fine with that.
