I have not played this game, but I found the art to be unbelievably good when I first saw this thread. Like among the best I've ever seen in this style. My intention was to come around and play it when the corruption/domination stuff gets into the game. Imagine my disappointment when I just found out that the artist quit.

So I went through the patreon post ready to raise my pitchfork. The situation seems to be that the artist is uncomfortable drawing lewds and explicit scenes. Something that he did not realize until the project was underway I guess. That is pretty irresponsible, but at least it seems like they parted on good terms. It wasn't some monetary dispute, ego trip, or some shady bullshit.

The new art is top fucking notch as well. I think many people will find the original art superior, if not more unique. That said, the new artist is absolutely in the top tier for AVNs and supposedly is fine drawing sex scenes. It seems like there was a distinct lack of lewds in the 5 chapters we have so far. A lot of that is because the artist was not comfortable drawing them. The new artist and the revamp will probably add more scenes.

For Darren we have decided to keep the essence of his character design, but we've added some details that enhance his personality. These are, for example, bitten nails and a slightly more insecure expression, among other things. We have also opted for a slightly more tacky color palette for his outfit.

For Moore, we've pretty much decided to stick to the original character design. What we have added is the wedding ring. This was something that I had in mind from the conception of this character, but it was a point of contention with the previous artist. So with the opportunity to redesign our characters, I've decided to add it back, to give players a hint of Moore's backstory.

He never should have started. Surely he knew this was a porn game, which would require porn scenes. If he was uncomfortable creating such scenes, he should have turned the job down in the first place, instead of getting part way through and then bailing. It is unfortunate that he actually made money off of his half-hearted effort. I don't care how talented an artist he is. There is no way he should have profited in any manner off of such a dick move.

While I sympathise with that point of view, none of us here are privy to what they agreed so it is rash to make judgements. Maybe Javier had only agreed to do a fixed number of illustrations. Maybe he was talked into it but actually had some other commitment he really wanted to do. Maybe he just had a change of heart. The crux of the matter is that there was no formal agreement for him to do more illustrations. If you want a commitment from someone you really need to put it in writing at the outset, rather on relying on your interests being aligned.

While I agree that we have only heard the developer's side of the story, if you accept that version, it was a dick move by the artist to just quit because he didn't like what he was being asked to do.

I suspect that the contracts within development teams of porn games are usually pretty straight-forward. Just that a member will provide such-and-such for so much payment. Either party is probably able to terminate the arrangement at any time. I know of some team members who just vanished, and the leaders had to find replacements without any warning.

In this case, there obviously was something in writing, since the developer has been forbidden from using any of the artist's work going forward.

The only thing I could blame the developer for here is if she persuaded the artist to join the team even after he expressed reservations about what would be done. That would place the blame on her. But we don't know that, any more than we know his side of the story.

I would also say, since the artist didn't want to do sex scenes, I wouldn't want him on the project once he expressed that sentiment, regardless of any contract. The end product would not be good in such a situation. So in that respect, it's just as well that he is gone.

So you think that your convictions as a "good" artist count for nothing and that it's all just business?
Well, you will certainly have more in your bank account, but that is the only satisfaction you will get out of it.
Remember, just because someone pays you for your labour doesn't mean they own you or your craft, and that's why we also need well-drafted contracts before such a project can even get started, so that each participant knows where they stand and exactly what is required of them; in this case explicit drawings of course.
And I'm sure if this had been done properly, they certainly wouldn't be in the position they are in now and wouldn't have to do the artwork all over again.
