If you've been waiting for years, what the fuck is a few weeks or even a month to not get a dogshit MTL? The stuff done by Alex is mediocre quality and he seems to miss translating basic shit like MAIN MENU OPTIONS.
Xebit is likely doing this project. He uses AI, but heavily edits it with his human interpretations. He did translations for the demos that were a lot higher quality than the usual MTL shit. DazedAnon has also said he'd translate this if Xebit doesn't.

All AI, but I'd definitely prefer Xebit, though. No idea who Alex is.

When I say MTL trash I mean low-effort attempts that just dump it into a translator and that's it. I think Xebit did a good job on the demos.

Game name?

Seriously, you can see all this stuff from just playing the game for a few minutes.

- Options menu missing translations
- Control instructions untranslated
- H status untranslated
- Dialogue boxes keep changing size (presumably from some text wrapping fix)

This is an example of poor quality MTL.

That one isn't a good example because Alex didn't officially release that TL. Dunno who jumped the gun and got it on F95 as a complete TL. It was also discussed over in Dazed's Discord. The thing has hundreds of images, which is the source of most if not all untranslated stuff. If you know Dazed's works, you know that Dazed doesn't do images either, he relies (and tries to pay) O&M's . The cost for that particular game was over 200$ in images alone, and that was with O&M lowballing it.

Basically, without someone willing to do the complicated work of extracting all the text from the images, translating it, and then editing all those hundreds of images, then that game will never get a full on proper TL. Even dedicated Fan Translators will balk at that thing.

Also, supposedly, the dialog box thing is a feature from the original game, but I haven't tried the game in JP, so I don't know if that's true or not.

Lmao, poor Alex, dude's getting jumped by everyone over a bad translation, all 'cause someone happened to name-drop him.
I'm sure someone will bring up the game with the thief girl that jumps people and fucks them. I'm too lazy to look-up the link.

That game was still in test, but someone already posted it on F95. Of course, it's gonna be the translator's fault that someone else jumped the gun. Obviously!

I'm sure there are places that gentleman can shine. But I just don't think this is a game that need a quick translation in 5 hours and still have many untranslated bits and pieces. His words, not mine.

Mtool is a good stopgap, that way it does not scare away any would-be translator while satisfying people who want translation right away.

Dude what is your problem with him. It’s a free translation designed for people who wish to play the game as soon as possible. Who cares if some things are missing? To the people who want to play as soon as it releases, they don’t mind pulling out google lens every once in a while.

The original post summoning/soliciting Alex even says he just wants Alex to translate so he can play and not wait, but clarifies the game still deserves a proper translation.

You are arguing with a wall. If you don’t want to play with Alex’s translation, then wait for Xebit like the rest of us.

Never said I wanted it to be the final translation anyway, just a stopgap
There are no "Stopgap" translations. If a translator sees "Translated" in the OP, they just leave and go somewhere else. You're just guaranteeing the game won't ever get a decent translation.

Especially since most translators don't wanna deal with how belligerent the original translator gets when you poach a translation from them. It's been like that in the fan translation scene for over 20 years. This isn't anything new or out of the ordinary.

No, this is a prime game. It WILL get a proper translation no matter what.

No ai translator would ever get mad if a proper translation comes later unless they're dumb af

That's not really the problem. AI TL peeps generally don't care. If someone can do a better job, they're welcome to it and all that.

The issue is that if there's an AI TL, the odds of getting a dedicated fan translator to work on the game drops drastically. After all, lots of people will already be content with the AI TL and will not revisit the game just because a better TL is available. Especially if it's Dazed tier, which these days is so close to proper English that the only thing in question is often the accuracy of the TL... which someone who doesn't know Japanese can't question anyway.

People have to remember, fan translators, the ones that know Japanese, have no need to do translations. They can just play the game as is and screw everyone else who doesn't know Japanese. So if they do TL, they either do it out of the goodness of their hearts (which can only take you so far because TL-ing anything is tedious, horribly boring work and games are particularly horrible to work with), they do it because having people play their TL makes them feel good (which obviously won't happen if everyone already played an AI TL), or they do it to make an extra buck (which again, won't happen if everyone already played an AI TL).

Those are the three major reasons someone might fan-TL. So yeah, if this gets an AI TL, good luck seeing a manual TL, ever, unless some official publishing happens... and that seems unlikely with this dev.

I've seen plenty of fan translators not bother with games that had shitty MTL published, much less AI TLs, which, as mentioned before, these days produces much more proper English with much fewer issues, leaving only the accuracy of the translation in doubt. For all we, who don't know JP, can tell, AI TLs could very well be full re-writes or fanfics... but we have no way to tell the difference, we can only judge the English itself if it's consistent...

So yeeeeah.

If people want full on, manual TL, it's best to ensure that the game remains untouched for a while, and it's best for people to be patient. I know that's a lot to ask for with the current "gotta have shit NAO!!OneOne1" generations, but that's how it goes.

If people don't want a manual TL, then go with whatever.

And I had said there would be places where he could shine, hadn't I? So what's your problem?

If that's all it takes to scare them off their translations would have been shit anyways.
