Phew, that was a hell of a job that one!
So. I know it took a while. I hope that now you've all seen it you can see why it took so long!
A lot of it was... Honestly pretty stupid things, as it often is, but it became a playground to mess with a whole host of new ideas, little bits kept getting added here and there. It just kept expanding!
Luckily a lot of what we've accomplished is now stuff we can apply to future projects easier, as ever the time is all about figuring it out, rather than applying the solution.
And now I've got all the assets, learned some new stuff and am the proud owner of my own mocap suit.
I'm very anxious to get started playing around with it. Showing you guys some fun recordings in it, and generally using it to enhance the standard of all animations moving forward.
As ever. New technology is an opportunity to enhance things, rather then making other jobs easier, but luckily in this case, it makes things a lot faster too!
By far the longest part of the production was the modeling and creative actual building of the scene.
The full story is kind of an interesting one I think, so. I had a thought. Some of you may have noticed the tiers shift around happened, I had a think on your feedback from my last poll post.
I put up my prices recently, because I believe I'm at a standard where it is a fair asking price for the content.
But I don't really like doing it, especially without necessarily offering anything for it, so I had a think about what people would actually want.
Thus the birth of the pixel peeper tier instead!
A lot of people ask me about the process, how to get started with this stuff, so, I figured I could put together some videos of me just talking through the production, what went wrong, where all the time went, a kind of post mortem analysis of the project.
Might be interesting to see for some and is not like that stuff would take long to make at all.
Also, You were all right I think, 4k is a buzzword that people attach and it really doesn't do much to enhance the experience, if I want to spend extra time rendering, I want it to be in service of an improved experience for everyone.
The videos I put out are very precisely controlled in their compression, at least recently, so they will provide the experience I see, to you.
Because the raw masters run into the tens of gigabytes sometimes, it's just not realistic to distribute content that large, but some people might want the masters for some reason so I figured I'd add that into the tier rewards.
Anyway
That was then and this is now, time to move forward.
So, I know that took ages, a lot of things became apparent to me during the production:
- I am working way too hard
- I need help to do what I want to do
- I'm not good at giving estimates
- I'm not good at managing projects for a team
So, there's a lot of work to do, and I've got several people helping me work on it now, but it all landed right in the middle of the biggest and most ambitious project I've ever undertaken.
So needless to say, it was an absolute mess!
I'll save you the details but suffice to say, things will need changing.
So, there's a lot of administrative work to take place, the result I hope, is going to be a much smoother and cleaner working environment for all of us, and thus, better quality projects, delivered quicker!
But... Quicker because I'm not tackling issues that I'm not best equipped to handle, or spending 2 months simply modelling assets.
Quicker because when I sit down to start animating, everything is ready for me.
Quicker because everyone has their respective jobs and work efficiently and... With a reasonable period of hours.
Everyone that works for me gives their all, I'm extremely proud of each and every one of the extremely talented people I have the pleasure of working with.
But they have personal lives and I, for a bit in the middle there, didn't.
It was not an exaggeration to say this project cost me... Basically most waking hours of my life for about the last 4 months.
It's been exciting and fun! Don't get me wrong. But it took everything from me to make it.
And, for a part I began to respond emotionally to a lot of, sometimes valid critique.
That kind of passion... I mean it leads to the standard you see in the chun LI piece, but it really did take nearly everything from me to make it.
And that's not sustainable long term.
The plan
So, as of right now, I'm on holiday, taking a week off to decompress, I may not reply to anyone or appear on the discord even.
Upon my return, I'm going to build a solid and effective remote working environment for my 3 staff, I'm going to have assets modelled in advance.
There is going to be structure, there is going to be boundaries for me and my staff, we are going to work effectively together to bring you guys, the highest quality entertainment possible.
The standards I have set out to this team is we will be breaking new ground, using the kind of technology normally reserved to Hollywood studios, but with, you know.
Actually good writing.
Hence the mocap suit, hence the guy I've hired to make the most detailed, anatomically model that has ever been made for porn, allowing us to make and account for preferences, providing alternatives for those who prefer certain body types, in ungodly accurate detail.
That's all going to take some time of course. So I have a couple simple projects lined up that really just need animating.
But the aim is to work more effectively, things will get more frequent, for now though. I have some simple projects lined up using existing assets.
Still just as exciting I'm hoping, because I have the mocap suit now!
So the next project is sombras run through the edging lab, then I'm thinking something female. So maybe Kiriko, but that needs assets so perhaps just Brigitte in the milking ward, stuff that I can get out in weeks rather than months.
During that time my modellers are going to work on the assets, my writers are going to write scenes and get the voice work done, ready for the next big new 'stem' of content.
But, important other point, I'm merely going to use this platform to give you guys updates on what's happening, I'm not going to be providing timeframes anymore.
I'm clearly bad at it, and it was putting too much stress on me and my team.
So. Some exciting stuff to come soon hopefully. But for now, I'm gonna go play baldurs gate 3
