It doesn't ''need'' to be treated in any sort of one way. The developer should implement whatever twist and turns to make the game as memorable for the reader as possible, it doesn't matter wether it's due to kindness, cruelty, morality or depravity.
So long as it stirs a strong emotional response from the reader then it's mission accomplished.
